My hope is that it expands to two nights so more people can play and the bars make even more money. Imagine. Also, I wish there was a place for all the local acts to sell their music on the street. Like a table, and a band rep. could sit out their and pitch the album. That way no one but the band would be responsible for their own cash.
Or a bunch of tables in the street with fliers and CDs!!! excellent.
Hey! Do you think I could get away with walking around with a backpack, a large brutish friend and a sandwich board selling our disc?

Great. And any way I can volunteer my time/energies helping out, let me know. Except for maybe after-crawl clean up. Yuk.

I think an ideal situation would just be some space that's set aside on third or fourth street. Bands and labels would be responsible for their own tables, merch, money, etc., without any meddeling from the paper.

Tables for local record labels is a kick-ass idea! Someone should talk to someone about that.

Saturday, April 22.

As far as setting up a general merch area, that could be easily approved. All we'd need would be some tables and adequate lighting.

I just didn't think anyone would be interested in being tied down to a merch table when they could be having fun checking out bands and hanging with friends.

That's what I was thinking. I love the idea of having a merch area; I have trouble picturing it though. Who would watch the merch? I'd rather not be tied to a table all night (that night at least) myself*. Would it all be in one place? Like a store/tent venue? I don't how many bands have merch, but it seems like even 30 bands could take up a huge area. Would it be in the individual venues? A lot of them would not have the room with the crowd (Burt's for sure). And if it were altogether, would it need it's own security?

*you know, the more I think of it, the more I think that wouldn't be so bad. band members could take turns, or even "carpool" their stuff with other bands they know and trust. I'm sure there could be tables for local labels for one thing.

No way. People could totally take turns. It would be great. Best, I think, if it were outside. When else are you exposed to that many people?

We'd hopefully have a big tent along Third or Fourth Street with fencing all around it.

Oh yeah, lighting the thing would be nice, too.

All-ages, minimal/no security. The fence would keep the bozos from running off with your stuff.

I'm sure you all have husbands/wives/boy-girlfriends/groupies that wouldn't mind minding the store, at the very least while you're off playing your set.
I have to work every goddamned crawl, but I still manage to have a good time.

The thing that actually concerns me is the tables and chairs -- I'm not sure we'd have the resources to provide them. Failing that, I don't think the bands would be willing to get loaded down with that much more crap to haul over to the crawl.

(Akward, bulky equipment AND akward, bulky merch AAAND akward, bulky tables and chairs?)

(It ain't happening.)

And there some other issues we've got to figure out as well.

1) How do we prevent, say, Wiccan Earth Goddess from comming in and selling her hemp handicrafts there instead of one of the bands?

2) And what about non-Crawl bands? Should they be prevented from selling their merch there, too?

Just some stuff to think about.

I will ask my husbands/wives/boy-girlfriends/groupies. One of them must be willing. Would they have to pay to get in? Or do they get roadie status?

Can I get a table next to you?

We can provide our own table and chairs. We can probably share it with a few other bands too. I say the rest of the bands have to lay down a towel.

Actually, having a space for the bands might help, re: bulkyness and moving stuff. If there was a band-only entrance near the edge so we could load our shit in, maybe it could double as a semi-backstage area?

Non-Crawl bands should totally be allowed to sell their stuff. Speaking as a generally non-Crawl bandSmile
And I'm sure we could figure out a way to pay for tables. How expensive are they really? Could bands, (everyone's going to bitch about this) pay like $5 or $10 each for their space to cover the cost of the tables and fence? That might be a way to regulate and prevent people from selling other things in there.

Actually, before all this stuff about fences and tents gets out of hand I gotta tell you that it's not going to happen. I do all the permitting for the crawls with the city and they're very strict about what they'll let happen. There are so many people on the streets that they don't want anything out there. It's all I can do to keep the firemarshalls from demanding a roped off firelane running the whole length of central. That would suck, wouldn't it?

On another note, I'm also responsible for the fiscal health of the crawls. They are incredibly expensive to put on and I'm very reluctant to incur any expense that isn't either necessary or likely to generate additional revenue.

NOW, there's some talk about getting a merch area sponsor. That would cool, but we have no idea what that means or if it will happen yet.

So, not to be a killjoy, but don't start imagining a tent with fencing then get mad when there isn't one.
