It sucks and I hate it. Esp. at a big show. It's like riding someone elses skateboard and dropping in on a huge concrete bowl.
I remember the Metal Tribute show a year or two ago at the Launchpad. They had like 10 bands or something so they had a backline. I think the guitar amp was a solid state crappy amp, something small.
If you're gonna backline a metal show, you better have a fucking Marshall stack on stage... at least!!!

I've never seen a backline at the crawl. Even when I play at backlined shows, I always bring my stuff. Backlines do save some time, but it sucks trying to re-EQ an amp after someone else has run their stuff through it.
You will probably get an hour slot at the crawl, adn most of the bands I've seen don't use it all anyway... That gives bands plenty of time to set up, and crawlers some extra time to get from one club to another.
Playing a backline set would be like putting on a womans dress. It just isn't going to work. And as far as playing other peoples shit.. Left Brain always plays orignal songs no matter what because that is what we are there for. To tell our stories, not someone elses.
If that is your thing, playing covers.. then cool. do it well because the fans know when something doesn't sound right.

I think he meant playing someone else's stuff as in someone else's equipment.
