I think it's been stated time and again that the crawls are determined by the respective venue managers. They pick who they think can draw the best, or play up the crowds the best.
If the crawls booked every aweful band in this town, no one would pay $$$ to go. I was lucky enough to play a crawl once...and it was just because Joe invited us on his own accord...it definitly wasn't because we pack the house or put on a killer show. |

Don't get too worked up about it.
I played the last crawl with the Surf Lords. Waiting in a hotel overlooking the crawl bullshiting with people in our crowd was more fun than actually playing. No kidding... just hanging out, getting a bite to eat at Pearl's, taking some photos from afar, and networking with music people that are out are the best parts of the evening. Wading back and forth through a crowd of angry, unruly drunks with a drumset in hand is lame. Ray from Rage told me once that an event like this creates "amateur night" in terms of the crowds. I couldn't agree more. The Golden West's sound man gimped me by putting nothing but kick drum with ridiculous amounts of reverb through my monitor. I struggled through the whole set to hear anyone else. I have had far more comfortable and rewarding shows kicking ass on non-crawl nights at great venues like Burts or Launch. |

The last crawl was great. We had to play early, 9 pm, because Noelan had to work, but it worked out great for us. No pressure, not as much competition. We were really feeling it that night. Burt's was at fire code 15 minutes into our set with a lineup outside! at 9pm!It was probably my favorite crawl ever.
Beat the hell out of Banana Joe's a few years back. Those fucking stairs... I still can't get over it. I will bitch about that place until I'm dead. I personally like crowds of any kind. There isn't much of that around here usually, and I've lived places with more of it, so I miss it sometimes and it's fun. I agree that you don't get much of a music crowd, more of an "excuse to get drunk" crowd. But you get a lot of other musicians watching, and that's always cool. Ultimately, as a band you have to prove yourself to a non-music crowd, so I don't mind playing to folks I've never seen before and mostly won't see again. If it was the same old hardcore crowd we have at most local shows then it wouldn't really have any point at all. |

I only like playing the crawls because of the gracious crowds who actually fight the lines and the homies just to come and see us.
Come on Levi you know Banana Ho's was the bomb diggity bomb, literally. I thought there was a bomb or something because the fire alarm went off through over half of our set. It went off during your bands set too, no? |

The only crawl I played was a few years ago with Atomic Love Medicine...at the Bannana Joe's. It sucked...I got sick. It was indeed more fun to see other bands. But I'm always up for 10,000 people to see whatever I'm doing. I hope Big Lips can play this one.

We played BJ's at the Crawl one year. There were two funny things about that show: Their dress code was in place, so most of our scrubby-ass fans couldn't get in. No white sneakers! WTF? Also, the stage was backed by a slanted wall of mirrors, which makes for some bizarre sound issues.
But it was fun nonetheless. Made lots of new fans, for some reason. I'd do it again, tho this time I'd warn friends to dress up. |
