What does it matter what he listens to? Just curious.
A vast majority of the best drummers around are metal drummers, given the reason most of us listen to metal. But in Alb., there are alot of very odd sounding bands, (not shity, just odd), so that may not apply around here. I for one am a die hard metal fan, and that about all I listen to, (most of the time),but do not play anything close to it in 237. So why does it matter?

it matters b/c our band isnt metal and we dont like it. i didnt say metal sucks or that the people are not cool or talented. but every drummer i see in this thing is metal. i wasnt tring to diss, just get some one we can relate to and have a musical relationship with in our band.

So maybe explain what kind of drummer your lookin for.

There always seems to be an ass load of drummers until someone is looking for one.

He already did - one who doesn't listen to metal. Seems clear enough to me.

I played the Stork Club about 3 years ago.

The guy that drums for locals Death Valley Days and Black Tie is good and definitly not a metal drummer. He played with the Bellmont for close to a year. His name is Travis Williams...ask around and I'll bet you can find him.

Another guy is Murdock, formerly of Into the Quick. He's good and his band just broke up. Same thing though, you'll have to hit up a few musicians in order to find the guy...

to say you want a drummer that DOESN'T like metal is to say you want someone that has no interest in some of the best players of the instrument.

i tout my musical tastes as wide to middlin' but a good portion of my favorite "metal" bands are based solely on the drummer...
seeing as how i am a sucker for melody/lyrical content/structure in general (and you cannot understand a third of what most metal bands are singing).

i think that what you REALLY want is a drone that will like what you tell them to like and that is a recipe for a shit sandwich of a band.

getting permission is pointless

I don't think what he is looking for is a drone. I think he wants a drummer that plays within the music they are creating. I was in a punk band a few years back and we got a new drummer that was "metal". Together it sounded like garbage because he would go off on these tangents that did not blend with the music at all and no matter how much we pointed it out, he just kept doing it.

Having the technical skill and ability to play bad ass drums from playing metal does not have anything to do with their ability to play any other kind of music. Having said that, it is not wise to single out not wanting a musician from any genre in your band because you never know how it will sound together unless you give them a session. It could be just what you need.

There are drummers with metal roots/skillz, etc who can play other styles with the right feel.

I agree with Dr.thunda and Scutt, if you can play metal well, you should be able to play everything else to. (Unless your name is Craig and you go to Sandia)

I admire drummers, I still cant figure out how they can do something different on each arm/leg, all at the same time. It's crazy. I thought guitar was hard, until I tried drums once. So far I have listens to 4 of the bands on this site, so far some good drummers around here, anyone recomend any good rock bands to check out, especially with good drummers, cuz they are fun to watch.

which brings us to the next issue re: drummers .

regardless of skill level, you still have to contend with the overwhelming tendency for them to be hyperactive blowhard showoff douchebags .

i did not say they PLAYED metal, (nor did the seeker of said drummer)

he said they cannot LIKE metal.

again, i say nertz to that .

if you want to master your instrument, you should look in every genre for excellent players, and learn what you can from them .

i try, but i just can't find a "shred" of anything worthwhile in vai, malmsteen, wylde or other such guit-wankers.

and by worthwhile, i mean interesting .

LET'S FIGHT ! ! !

calls it like i smells it

Alright...someone has to say it. You guys need to stop looking for a drummer and start looking for a singer. For god sakes listen to your recordings!
