Wow. I saw some really well polished rock last night. These two bands in particular, Sloan and Apples in Stereo, were great. Flawless sound, well composed songs, stage presence, wrinkle-free execution and gobs and gobs of talent.
How boring. Does anyone remember the Weezer show at the Albuquerque Convention center a few years ago? It was crap--not because the music was bad, but because the band was just so lifelessly perfect that it was more fun to mosh around the audience than watch them perform. I'm sure I would have been more into Sloan and Apples in Stereo if I knew each of their songs by heart. Has anyone else seen them live? Was it just an off night or are my expectations too high? Eh. My only regret is I missed The Faint to see them. But I've seen The Faint before, so I'm not too disappointed as I took a chance to hear new music. Sloan being perfect. The Apples in Stereo rule...you couldn't have seen anything better than them so don't feel bad. This is their first string of shows together in many years, sort of a reunion of sorts. They are an incredibly influential band that pretty much invented the indie-pop genre in the 90's. Their record label, Elephant Six, spawned some really good bands. You did well, you should check out some of their records.

I will. I had a feeling I'd seen them before ... I was having major dejavu. The guy in his space suit behind the keyboard was like something from a dream I had once ... Cheers! —Amy Your SXSW field correspondent |

Also, John Dufilho from the Deathray Davies is now in the Apples in Stereo so I can imagine they're that much better. Sort of like how Eric Johnson from The Fruitbats is now in the Shins and bound to make them that much better.

That's just how Sloan is. Their recordings are the same way. They write great catchy songs. No frills good rock. I have always enjoyed that band. How long have they been around.....15 years or so?
