Being a nonsmoker, I've really enjoyed going to bar after bar here in Austin and not being met with cloud of smoke every time. My clothes are happy. My hair is happy. And, most importantly, my lungs are happy (though they aren't happy about the Austin allergy season).
When the ban was first implemented, there was a fear within Austin's music scene that the ban would severely harm the amount of shows and audience turn out (so says my graduate student friend living here). But the ban hasn't effected turn out. It's been business (almost) as usual for every venue. But, what I noticed is the advertisements by bars/clubs with patio space. Nothing says one can't smoke at an outdoor bar. Maybe this is was Burque needs: more outdoor patio/bars. A perfect example is the Blackbird Buvette. If they turn their back patio into a bar, it would be a great place for people to smoke and drink during the warmer months. Not a perfect solution, but it's better than becoming a "private club" in my opinion. Cheers! —Amy Your SXSW field correspondent |
