I'm pulling for the underdog, even though they are the ones that knocked my beloved Packers out.

What a game....Giants just wanted it more. That, and the fact that Brady sucked most of the game. If he'd played the whole game like he did that second to last drive, it would have been a different story.

I know there was only 1 second left and one official play to be run, but don't ya think the coach for the Patty's could have stuck around for it instead of running and leaving his whole team on the field?

Either way, kinda cool to see the underdog win it!

snore .

i suppose we can get on with filling our lives with the next pointless exhibition that SHOULD not really have ANY effect on our lives...

that would be basketball, right?

SO much more important than the war(s) or corruption or the increasing gap tweenst the have and haven'ts or ... whatever that doesn't involve a bunch of overpaid prima donnas, but actual events and issues that make a difference in REAL peoples' lives.

and i don't want to hear how pro sports does ___ for inner city kids or the economy.

college sports divert attention and funds from the educational process and no amount of attention the fucking lobos get justifies the disproportionate amount of money they get in relation to the school in its TRUE function:
education.

we are hated across the world for a great number of things, and professional sports are no small part of it.

a million dollars for a 30 second commercial?

in the words of nell carter:

give me a fucking break
.

What it is... is a break from the world's bullshit it gives people something to believe in something they can identify with. I love sports. There's nothing better than coming home from a long and stressful day and just sitting back with a beer and watching your team (Say the Red Sox) pummel the mother fucking Yankees! When I was growing up I had a very very hard life (why I joined the Air Force and ended up out here). The one thing that was always a constant get away was going to a Pats game or taking the train to Fenway to see the most beloved underdog sports team of all time (Red Sox again) lose. So you can concentrate on the stupidness this human race is putting upon itself and give up all hope for a brighter future. Me I'm gonna live life the best way I know how, by having fun, playing music, and watching sports, commercial bullshit and all.

...and fuck the Giants and Tom Brady for sucking ass last night.

I wholeheartedly agree with the above post. Professional sports in general lead to laziness, idle thinking and overconsumption. Think about the overall carbon footprint of just the superbowl! Exactly how much more global warming do we need? Outrageous!

I find it extremely offensive that Barrack Obama bought a campaign ad during the superbowl halftime show. It shows his desperation to steal the Gay vote from Hillary! Well played, Barrack. You may have stolen the votes of the multitudes of gay and closeted men who watch professional sports, but you'll never get the Lesbian vote. That belongs to Hillary. It was a real comfort to see all the grey-haired, wool Native-American print flannel shirt wearing 60-year-old lesbians turinig out to see Hillary Clinton at Highland the other night. She's so totally got it!

I suppose it reeks of desperation to interrupt an otherwise supposedly enjoyable evening of mindless jock t.v. with images of our asses getting kicked in Iraq or the devastation of global warming-fuled hurricanes, but when you're second fiddle to Hillary and time's running out, what else can you do?

Stu, you can say the same thing about any form of entertainment. It's not like any of the bands playing downtown are saving the world's poor and destitute.

No form of music or art will stop the US government, or any for that matter, from raping the Earth of its resources. Art is also not likely to educate many people as most consumers don't want politics mixed with their entertainment.

You want to really make a difference, sacrifice yourself like the Buddhist Monks did during Vietnam... Burn yourself alive someplace where there's lots of media coverage.

As someone who both played college football AND graduated with a degree, I think I might have a bit of insight into this train of thought.
College athletics are not sponsored by the student populace or their tuition/fees. The tickets sold at collegiate sporting events make more than enough money to be enable the athletics department to be a self-sufficient entity.
Whether you like it or not sports are a great marketing tool to get students into certain schools. I don't know where you get the crazy idea that colleges exist to enlighten people. They primarily exist to make money. Otherwise, they would be free and/or really cheap.

First of all the "carbon footprint", as you like to refer to it, was much less than you think. The NFL used a windmill farm in New Mexico (of all places) to supply all of the power.

As far as Obama stealing the gay vote from Lying Bitch...oh I mean Hillary... Um, how many gay people do you know that actually watched the Super Bowl?

Someone needs to check some facts and get off the nipple being force fed down your throat by the most Socialist people to hide behind the word "Democrat".

neither are they garnering millions of dollars in pay, so i don't see the relevance.

i am sure that to the cynic (or sports fan) that is true.

but if you look at those that have tried to leverage their fame and fortune to help others, this also does not stand up to fact .

see: the one campaign , concert for bangladesh , live aid , brangelina's efforts to...whatever, sting , etc.

though some of the above are/were logistical clusterfucks and/or obnoxious pricks, they still show the ability of purveyors of "arts" to make a difference in lives other than their own.

and because i recognise that sports figures also fund charitable organizations, i am acknowledging that, but how many of then fund NON SPORTS related charities?
or benefits that DON'T carry the celebrity founders' names? (i.e. - a vanity and or legacy ploy)

i realise that bagging on professional/college sports will raise a lot of ire in jocks and former jocks, but being told to kill yourself because you think that it is a HUGE waste of time and resources is a little ridiculous.

i don't see how suicide in a fiery ball has benefited anyone other than RATM, (and i hate them and their feigned outrage)

seems to me that activism and selfless public service is a better way to go.

as for my activism, i have not the fortune to start a global anti-poverty program or a pro sports team(yet hyuh hyuh)
but i have made a difference within my limited abilities by NOT spending money at a great number of evil corporate tentacles (McDonald's, Anheuseur Busch, etc) that do more evil than ALL of the bands that i have forked over money for CDs, tickets etc. I have also donated to local salvation army stores, Joy Junction (despite it being a christian charity) and others.

so in that comment, i also disclosed my own guilt in irresponsible consumer spending: entertainment that does no good OTHER than giving joy and inspiration to my family and myself for years, as opposed to $200 seats to a one time sports event that is over in less than 3 hours, and then FOREVER GONE.

also

isn't this a music forum, NOT a sports sports sports sports venue ?

i am sure that the dozens of talk shows AND cable channels are better places to talk about the physical activities of people we will never meet.

I LOVE SPECTATOR SPORTS

to me, rocksquawk is a place for NM musicians to chat about whatever they like.
I'm also pretty sure I might be one of few people that have been using this forum for 5 or 6 years now.
So yeah, if we wanna talk about whatever, I believe that is our prerogative. Don't like it? Don't read it. If you do read and respond with acidic remarks about how uncaring and stupid the rest of us(jocks) are, then of cousee you can expect a long-winded reply.

I agree with much of your reasoning but I don't go around telling other people they are wrong because that would make me a hypocrite.
I don't shop at walmart, I frequent mom and pop stores and i always try to buy stuff made in the US. I do understand that my dollar says a lot more than my mouth.

So yeah, basically fuck you and your high horse.
See you at practice tomorrow night Smile
