So, why is it that drummers have such a bad name?? You know, the old girlfriends mom, "oh, he's a drummer, watch out", or, "fuckin drummers", and, "oh, now I get it, your a drummer". Where the fuck did all of this shit come from??? The way I see it, the drummer is the most talented fucker in the band, everyone play's the fuckin guitar, why doesnt the drummer ever get any fuckin credit?? Maybe not enough people have tried it? or maybe that many people wish thay could use all four limbs at the same time, and chew gum????? I know all of you, or most of you are damn good at what you do, but what the fuck, whats up with this drummer shit, just wondering what everyone else thinks, does anyone know where this came from?
Oh, and yes I know there is alot of famous drummers, but, compared to guitarists and singers, we are pretty much forgotten. So, give me some feedback, and what you think or feel. http://www.myspace.com/blacktoothgrinnm "I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. first of all, you're in the back. you're sitting down. your face is hidden by that china that you use on one song. you don't get to dance around and pose or pout, you have to do a lot of work but it looks (and can be) easy. when it comes to being famous or well known, you might have to embrace the drummer reputation. as far as being better than anyone else in the band... i'll simply predict you'll be hearing from people playing other instruments that disagree with you. as for four limbs being used, try ten fingers on a piano, then a foot for the pedals. that's seven more things to co-ordinate.
no disrespect to any drummer, but you don't have to play notes. you do have to be attentive to the tone, but you don't have think about the harmonies (good drummers can hold the form during a jam). i've played drums, but as with any instrument, to be good on ANY instument you have to practice, play with a group of people, and have an idea of what you want to sound like. one thing that i've found interesting is the notion of the lead singer being the leader and main creative force in the band. lead singers have guitar players beat for being noticed and shown undue adulation. "eddie vedder is genius", "axel rose was THE reason for GnR's success", and other such phrases have been uttered in my presence. those guys (gal if you're belanova or brazillian girs) get the most focus. i say let it be so, i rather have someone dissipating the praise and attention. one may say, however, that by your question alone you have answered much about the drummer. you guys don't think you're being heard or being recogonized, but i promise we heard that sweet paradiddle before the sweeter fill. just try to stop in the middle of a song and see if anyone notices. how many 'rock' bands play without drummers? they are in the minority. |

Wow, as of late I been saying....Fucking Guitarists, Bassists and Singer............LOL!
Most people I know think its cool to be a drummer........ I think every instrument have a certain degree of difficulty but I would sure love to learn guitar or bass so I would only have to carry out 4-5 pieces of equipment rather than 8 drums 6 cymbals stands, double bass pedal, Hi-hat stand, 9 cymbals, 2 tambourine and tempo blocks with stands and when I'm feeling really kooky a extra snare drum.........Oh and flight case for my wireless gear...... I've never known a drummer who wasn't the most talented, tightest member of the band, and most drummers play other instruments better than the other members too (actually I have known bad drummers, but they were drunks who got kicked out pretty soon). Most drummers in town are in two or five bands. Ever listen to Chris Newman from Unit 7 Play piano, or guitar or anything else? Mike Rupert from Coke is Better with Bourbon was playing drums for Lush Rustler and Icelandic while playing guitar for Abominant Race and doing bass lessons and putting everyone to shame. In my current band Noelan is a better singer and bass player than I am. I think musicians respect drummers more than the average person, but we probably respect guitar players more too, or any other band people.
Melody is what sells music, especially to the uniformed. I'll say this too: a drummer will always beat you at arm wrestling |

I was mostly refering to people outside the music industry, I dont here much shit from other musicians, other than all you fucker's.
That is pretty fuckin funny though! It really doesnt bother me that much, I was mostley wanting to know where all this originated from. As far as the pizza joke, I think that goes for all musicians. Then why are guitarists a dime a dozen, and drummers are so rare? http://www.myspace.com/blacktoothgrinnm "I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. As my guitar tech says: a great drummer can make a mediocre band sound good. I have a tremendous amount of respect for good drummers! I've sat down at a drum set and that stuff is mind-boggling. I'll stick with guitar. Of course, the folks you really should be watching out for are those darn singer/songwriters...

Nice to have a little respect, thanks! SJ said it right, it's alot cheaper than you think to start drums. Parents sanity? thats a lame excuse, they do make mutes.
I do respect guitarists alot, that's one thing I have tried, many times, but just cant pick it up, I think my fingers are to big. But they (guitarists) dont have any problem getting any credit. Now, as far as the name calling, I dont believe I have ever resorted to that on this forum, because it's a chicken shit thing to do, this is just a discussion, so fuckin chill. http://www.myspace.com/blacktoothgrinnm "I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. When I listen to a band I mainly listen to the drummer. If the drummer isnt good, I wont like the band.
Drumming takes the most dedication, I think. You have to be a bit of an intellectual to really master it. I dont know what it is with drummers and not having jobs. One of my best friends and my sister's boryfriend are both drummers. Neither one has a real job. |

We may not have to play "notes", but sometimes we're the only one in the band who knows what time signatures our songs are in.

I think the parents not wanting their kids to play drums is a valid argument. Drums are loud and they take up a lot of space and don't match the decor of the house. You know what I mean? Man, I wish I had time to learn to play drums. I can keep a beat, but if you ask me to do a fill, or anything outside a simple 6/8 or 4/4, forget it.
And Scutt, you know Animal from Electric Mayhem, right? The Muppets? I think that's where it came from. |

Animal huh? I guess that kinda makes sense.
Now, as a parent myself, I think it's fucked up to deny your kids from doing something they want to do because of the decor, or noise, there are lot's of way's around that, I would rather listen to banging drums and lose some space than to deny them their passion, or whatever it may be, you automatically sign yourself up for that when you become a parent, your a bad parent if you dont support what they want, given it's something logical, I just think it should be supported reguardles. Just sayin. However, your point is true, shity as it is, but true, alot of parents dont alow it. http://www.myspace.com/blacktoothgrinnm "I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me.
