Does your band have a "group" vehicle? If so, so you use "band money" to pay for gas, insurance, repairs?

I have a pretty sweet custom van going to waste in my back yard.. full of crap... and my bandmates are begging me to get it on the road as the band van.

It's such a pain in the ass to take multiple vehicles to gigs. But I've checked and the cheapest insurance is still $75 a month plus the thing only gets 10mpg. Not really worth it to only use once/twice a month.

Just a suggestion: look into a small trailer (and installin a hitch, if necessary) instead.

Our bass player in Big Mud Tractor had a sweet conversion van that we used before it blew up on the highway. I was actually thinking of buying a Pinzgauer as the Unemploidmobile. You can hose the vomit right out of it.

Josh has a pickup and we pitch on gas sometimes. Rachel just bought a smaller van as a day-to-day vehicle, and we'll rent a trailer and get gas out of band money next time we hit the road.

I'm scared now after reading the gear swiping thread! Last time we checked our shit every 10 minutes...

I've been using my astro minivan for band tours for the past 4-5 years. it gets close to 20 mpg.
I only use band fund money for it when on the road.

You don't need a truck unless you have a HELLUVA lot of HEAVY gear. Most cars will pull a trailer the size of the small U-Haul. A hatchback or wagon will maximize the combined capacity of vehicle/trailer.

Trailers are the easiest things to steal. If you're on the road and you got all your shit in a trailer. BE CAREFUL! Brian Jonestown Massacre recently had all their shit stolen when their trailer was swiped in NYC.

Drive a van and leave your pitbull in the van while you sleep.

I was just wondering what you guys did cuz my band wants to use my van but I feel like a dick asking for $$ for insurance. I haven't driven it in like 5 years and I have no reason to cuz it's my storage shed, I live downtown and have 2 other cars.

True, and I definitely wouldn't recommend trailers for tours or overnight gigs, but for local shows, as long as you're loading in right away and loading out immediately prior to leaving the venue, I think trailers are a viable alternative. Not that we use one, mind you...

Like y'all, ours is a true "Band Van" Insurance comes out of band earnings. You're only a dick if you use that money for dope and strippers. Well...even then......

Not if you're sleeping on the trailer. But then the bums start to take a liking to you.

Hey WebMonkey...are you looking to sell your van? If so, we'll take it!

i bought a van not too long ago...its a full size ford. its great for the band, but i mostly got it to haul my dirt bike...

anyways..long story short, WEBMONKEY, the insurance shouldn't be that much ($75). i think mine's only $30/$40. that is, unless you have a crappy driving record. i dunno about full coverage, but i'm thinking that the insurance co. would find a way to say that if your gear was stolen from the van, it wouldn't be covered. they're picky about 'professional equipment'...they won't cover it in renter's insurance either (useless fact for this thread).

3 members...3 trucks...how cool is that...though...one truck carries all our gear...should we go play outside of town...whatever vehicle is the most reliable gets the gas...as far as gas...no band funds...like strings and sticks and basic repairs...thats up to the individual mates...you break it you bought it...its a collective...band funds go to buttons...shirts...hats...womens clothing ie:baby dolls, spagetti straps...thongs...yall know whats up...damn...and we give that shit away....hmmmmmm...damn the alcohol...oh well...i should stop...

Insurance?

That's not very "rock and roll".

Who needs insurance?

On Scared of Chaka's first tour we used a van with no insurance, no registration, and almost no windows. (The front windshield was there)

The key is: don't wreck and don't get caught.
