Athenian democracy (such as it was) lasted maybe 50 years, Machiavellian protocols will undo every pro social endeavor for the common good. There is something instinctually satisfying about stabbing the guy in the back who just paid you. Global politics. Used car sales. Marriage. If you don't know who the sucker is at the table... I've dreamed (and glad I'm not the only one) of a public doctrine of fairness; it's the cautionary tale in Candide. Ultimately, a self serving fantasy that leads, inevitably, to destruction, despair, and drinking. Just CYA, help when it don't hurt, and jump ahead to the drinking.

That's way longer than I'm thinking this thing needs to last.

Yah-Hah! You plenty funny! Point is: at the best it ever was it still sucked and it was doomed to failure. The best you can hope for is not to have your whole life burned down and your attitude permanently wrecked. What follows from embracing a philosophy of vulnerable optimism will rip you from all you love (playing music). You'll learn to love something different. I was a staunch advocate of this "lets share" belief structure and I'm still paying for it. Keep the circle small, attach emotionally to nothing, hope for the best but Plan for the worst. Really, if you can be happy with: "take what you can, give nothing back" the music business can be a very rewarding career option. I've often thought about how to create the collective band arrangement contracted to an opener slot(ha!) that provides an opportunity for noobs and in-between-bands types for experience, skill maintenance, song tests, whatever, but unless you have exquisite skills for picking teammates, divine luck, or a bottomless bank account you risk much. Post your propositions up here, I come off all negative but I've been a part of this idea and one time it really worked. A fool for believing maybe; ... heroes, if just for one day. Please pardon the rant.

Optimism doesn't have to be vulnerable. Listen, this idea is clearly distasteful to plenty of people around here. Anyone who is interested, PM me and let's go for it.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Y'all sound like a bunch of Pinkos with that talk. All "Good Vibes" "Good Times" and "Helping A Brother/Sister Out" looks good on paper, but what the fuck y'all gonna do when the inevitable happens...? And you know it always ends up something like that.

Actually, your theory of that picture is probably closer to the truth than my illustrative intention. He does have a sort of BeardRock-er vibe going on there. Hmmmm...
