Getting better? I'm not sure. But still good, yeah, there are some. Let's see...Built to Spill has put out 6 good albums. Wilco has been fairly consistently good over the course of 6 albums. There are others I'm sure.

How old is old?

There's a bunch of categories of this as it pertains to the mainstream:

Bands that are still making 'alright' albums: Rush, Judas Priest, Black Crowes.

Bands that ditched mainstream right off the bat or changed their sound so you can't trace their 'success': Pearl Jam (Slightly older than Wilco,= not that old).

Bands who still put on a hell of a show: The Cramps., X.

People that are still holding on...George Clinton,,,Willy Nelson.

I don't know = ????

But since it is Gfx that started the post, of course there are tons of jazz/avant-garde/outside obscuros that are constantly getting better with age (for awhile).

i think it's pretty good. the few times i've listened to it i really liked the one song that sounded like a female silver apples. it was weird, but i dug it.

I guess it's ok, but not better than their previous albums. Damn Gfx, this one's harder than the 'who's better solo than group' one. I guess mostly because a lead singer cant do it for too long.

peace.

edit: the boredoms, beastie boys (i guess),the melvins, carlos santana can still play his guitar good.
if 90's is old:melt-banana, kataklysm

old! you know, over 18 or something

i am hoping for some pop/rock recommendations! ( i got the alt-jazz scene covered)

i read this industry blog not too long ago that says older acts should not bother with whole albums because no one cares. so...

believe it or not, the last pearl jam album was pretty damn good. i haven't heard really anything they did from like 1997-2005, but i thought that last self titled record was really great.

converge is better now than they've ever been, and they've been together something like 16 years.

neurosis still totally slays.

the last appleseed cast record was awesome, and that was their 6th or 7th.

the newest joan of arc record is one of the best things they've ever done.

i also agree with maury on wilco. also... while their last record wasn't awesome... brave new world by iron maiden was a fucking great record, a full 20 years after their first record.

Putting aside how much they maintained popularity, it's still like you need two catagories: consistency or growth. There are a million bands still putting on good shows, but so many of them are greatest hits bands. The problem with the rock/pop you mention specifically is that so much of it- even the good stuff-is simple and era specific. A band has to change or they will get bored, go out of style, or they'll become essentially a greatest hits band anyway since they just put out the same album over and over. It may just as good, but does it count?

I thought I had a ton of good answers though, but then I noticed the "still" part of the topic. I can think of lots of bands that still sounded good or sometimes even better (maybe with stumbles along the way, but still) after 5 or more albums.

But they are mostly broken up now. Beatles, Fugazi, Guided by Voices, Rocket From the Crypt, Archers of Loaf all finished on or near high points after being around awhile. Supergrass - the first, fourth and sixth albums are the best. AC/DC had a good run for a while. Cheap Trick? The middle stuff sucked, but the second self-titled one was one of their best albums, 20 years after the first one.

Yep.

Also agreed on the Melvins, ssk.

And re:how old is "old"? Orange Goblin's new one totally rips ass, and their first album was released in 1999.

Johnette Napolitano (she's not under Concrete Blond anymore, but I would argue that band was all her anyway). The new record is great.

Public Enemy's last disc was pretty excellent.

Aceyalone's done a bajillion awesome discs. Still one of the best MCs ever.

PJ Harvey's new stuff is way different but good.

Bjork's new stuff is stranger than ever but rad rad.

band goes boom

Type O Negative

Around since the late 80's and still kickin'.

In my opinion their latest album "Dead Again" was as good if not better than earlier albums like Bloody Kisses and October Rust.

Well you can't get as Pop/Rock as these guys but Journey came out with a 3 disk set, one original, re-recordings of their older stuff and a DVD all with their new singer Arnel Pineda...

I think the first week they got as high as #6 on Billboards top 200. If anybody caught them on VH1 these past couple of weeks showing that concert video, for band who hasn't had a hit since Trail by Fire (last record with Perry) that they can still write a damn good pop/rock song.

So for a band thats been together for over 31 years, they ain't doing too bad.

Journey w/new singer, Arnel Pineda
