Also, SKREECH, I think PARTS of ADORE are great, but some of the songs are weak and annoying in my book. To me, it's a fairly inconsistent album. I was going to post an old review I wrote about it, but it seems I can't do that.

I expect most people on this board will assume I'm totally cracked out (ah, those were the fucked-up days) but my vote goes to REAL LIFE by Simple Minds. Not that it's my favorite album or anything, but from a mainstream perspective it should've been huge. It was a dud.

If one of Todd Rungren's best songs truly is "Hello It's Me," then I won't feel a need to explore his catalogue further.

"Hello It's Me" is one of the many places Rundgren's music goes, but A Wizard, A True Star is a freakish and weird album, with Zappa-like minuets, 70's excess rock, pre-indie-rock experimentation, pop akin to "Hello...", and a 9 min. group of old soul covers. If you can't get past his voice, however, you won't like the album. "Hello" just happened to get popular, but it's closer to The Carpenters than "A Wizard..."

OK, here's one - STAIN by Living Color. I never thought that album got the credit it deserved. It's an extremely pissed-off record. Talk about musicians with "feel" who can "swing!" They do that even on all this hardcore borderline-metal stuff. Plus there's a great song about being bisexual to piss off all the homophobic bigots.
Still a go-to album for me to this day when I get in a certain mood . . . a great way to blow off steam.

So what are your musical tastes? From your posts I gather you like any from the 90's that was played on MTV.

i dunno, what qualifies as underrated/overlooked exactly?

underrated?
i'm with skreech, i think adore is actually a great record, and is often shit on, thus not rated accurately in my opinion.

also, i happen to like the first taking back sunday, and the first record by the used, both are typically thought of as generally worthless b/c of their commerciality/unhipness, but whatevs, i like em both.

overlooked? what does that mean? a great record not many people know about?
spirals - blood has been shed
owen - no good for no one now
the promise ring - wood/water
shinobu - worstward, ho!

When people talk about the birth of NY punk and CBGBs, people always mention Ramones, Television, the Patti Smith Group, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, The Fleshtones, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Blondie and Talking Heads.

But the Cramps are always omitted from the list when they were actually a part of that early NY punk scene and one of the few bands that still play to this day!

I saw them in San Fran a few Halloweens ago and it was sick. Lux Interior is one of the craziest frontmen ever.

When they played here years ago Lux grapped everything he could on the stage and built a huge towering sculpture. Mic stands, chairs part of the drum kit...

Maybe neither overlooked nor underrated, but damn good
Like the second or 3rd track he uses the bass line from Orion. Gives me goosebumps.

Maybe they're omitted from that list because most people think they suck. They definitely fit the definition of "cult act." But maybe I haven't given them a fair shake. I've only really been subjected to BAD MUSIC FOR BAD PEOPLE and thought it was so unbearably horrible that I would lose my lunch. Great cover though. And Lux does get my props for masturbating onstage.

I like Depeche Mode. And Dead or Alive. And Phranc. Scissor Sisters. Anything gay, really.
Endtroducing is a pretty good album to wig out on, but I get REALLY tired of the spoken word shit. That crap can seriously compromise a recording upon repeated listens. Tiresome, hearing the same dialogue over and over. When will DJs learn?
