It is amazing, I'm playing with 2 bands and just gave up a 3rd project (the music is awesome, they need a top notch Steely Dan kinda drummer ASAP). I know at least 1/2 dozen drummers better than me here which means there are probably DOZEN's better. Where are they? Maybe a kind music store will set up a DRUMMER contest of sorts so everyone can see who comes out of the woodwork. Amazing talent in this town. Could be the guitarist ratio far supercedes drummers and bass players who seem to be in short supply. They usually want FAME a little more. |

Got me... I could hold down at least three bands if I wasn't so busy with the one I'm in.
Oh...and the other thing I find funny about (some) drummers in this town... Are they afraid to hit their drums? Some of the guys out there are barely tapping!!! |

Sometimes its called "dynamics", rim shots, off center snare accents, crescendo and smack the f_ck out of it. The other side of the coin is "many" drummers I see here play the same volume level, louder than f_ck, all the time. While this is certainly fun and gets out the ya ya's, it does little to add content to the passage. Takes all kinds, lets have a drumoff and have some fun. I'm ready to get humiliated. Some clubs in town, ie-Barley Room, ol' Club R&B, etc... are down on drummers hitting hard which sucks but invariably playing a lot of different styles, volume levels, feelings, will make ya better. p.s. if you have a drumoff, don't invite Jim Byers, he is better than most of us put together x2. No shit. |

Oh...I'm all about dynamics...again, don't get me wrong.
It just looks like (there, how's that) some are afraid of hitting. ...and I've played The Barley Room several times. If the band's good, people are dancin' and buying drinks, they get over the volume level really quick. |

Agreed, each time I played the Barley Room once the crowd was liquored up, no one cared. If its a partially empty room the sound sucks due to acoustics there. They also may be mellowing due to po'ing lots of guitar players over the yrs. The P-Tails sure rock the f_ck out of the joint with their kick ass brand of blues. I'll be sure and hit some extra HARD notes tomorrow night, but of course no one will care cuz the music will be groovin' (or the place half empty). Who knows, its only rock and roll! Oh yeah, I forgot some drummers in my previous toast to greatness. Of course there are also- Donny Franks, Eric Nieto, "Big" John Edwards, Jim "Mag", Scutt, and a host who can smoke on any drumset (and that doesn't include the younger crowd who are probably better than us old farts). There are a lot of great drummers here no doubt. |

A drum contest would be awsome, I would definately go to that, seeing that I'm like the ultimate drum fan. Someone should really get this going. Drumtiger, where could I check out these guys? Donny Franks, Jon edwards, ect. I know I cant check out scut cuz they dont play any all ages shows.

Unfortunetly these cats don't play ALL ages shows. If you go to the Barley room early evening on a Thursday you can probably sit with your parents or someone and see the P-Tails. Right on a drummer fan! |

Beats me. I mean, they have machines that do that now. (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

LMFAO, lots of machines can do it, but it takes an IQ above 100 to figure out programming, sequencing, etc.... that leaves out many of the finer string players who can't even send an email. Of course without such an abundance of string players, there would be NO demand for drummers. Its a symbiotic relationship. |

Which reminds me---- -What did the drummer get on his IQ test? -Drool But if you want to see a drummer that impresses me, and blows doors on most, take a look. (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

Cool, lets do it next time. As promised I smacked extra hard last nite, sounded great till I cracked a Zildjan custom A crash. Ah the joys of rock and roll. Anyone want to buy several Zildjan cracked cymbals CHEAP? Maybe tonight I'll destroy a SABIAN. ROCK ON!!! |

I thinks its the idea of having to lug your kit to this and that practice or to this and that gig that most drummers kinda hide out......But I do agree that the ratio of guitarists to drummers is very off......But I think there are less bassists than drummers......I've tried numerous times to find a decent bassist here and I can feel the frustration also...
But its funny, I just quit all my bands I was in to spend some time at home....After 20 years of playing and giging, it was time I went to my back yard and pulled some of those weeds? But its weird not going out on Friday or Saturday to play a show, but just stay home and watch a movie or go out for ice cream. But if any of you guys know of a bass player who wants to form a good ol' rock band let me know.....I just might come out of retirement.....! John |
