That's for the John Lennon Battle of the Bands which is held on Feb 18th. The HM festival and Conference is being held on May 11-13th. Here's a link to all the info on HMM's website main page.

I read on their site that they won't notify bands til April 11th. Also, you gotta' pay $19.95 just to submit your band...no guarantee that you'll play, tho. ~B~

I guess 20 bucks is a small price to pay if you can get on the bill.

But how much will it cost for people to attend?

Will bands see a slice of that pie?

How many bands are entering?

It seems like they are marketing the event pretty heavily elsewhere other than Albuquerque and a lot of the bands wont even be from here so it makes me wonder what are chances of getting accepted really are.

Anyways, it sound like fun and a cool event if it actually happens. There sure is a lot that goes into putting something like that together so $20 seems like a small price to pay for me.

Keep us posted.

I'm a whore so I jump on pretty much everything that comes my way. Even if we don't get to play, that's not going to stop me from handing out mass amounts of promo CDs.

I'm half-way through giving out a thousand stickers.

It's all business and that's how I treat it. You gotta throw down a lot to get a business going.

The scene in Abq is as healthy as I've seen it over the last 10 years. We managed to come out the other side of the emo-wars intact, and now there is a much more varied musical palette!
The lack of carpetbaggers such as Emergenza and Hyperactive is one of the things which make us different from the dog-pay-dog realities of the larger musical Sodoms. I guess, more power to those who feel compelled to tithe for play--you are lining their pockets, not yours.
Go out, play it like you mean it....OWN THE STAGE! Spend that application money on a mike, send records to target reviewers savvy to your sort of tunage.
Don't like what you are hearing on the radio these days? Events like the Emergenza, and Hyperactive thing serve the status quo--and is that why you decided to live the life of rock?
oh,
KICK OUT THE JAMS!

"I'd like to see some dedication in this town"
-you need to go to less conferences--everybody i know is massively dedicated---our motto "what did i do for the band /label today"

I thought Hyperactive was a local mag, though they may not choose to focuse entirely on local bands. Am I wrong?

you are so right--and therein lies the rub!
Ever read any Ralph Waldo Emerson??
Self Reliance!!
The main problem with the aforementioned concerns is the dumbing down of the music scene--producing the L.C.D. if you will. Not to denigrate those who aspire to M.O.R. standards(and i'm not talking about Ya Ya(y'all are really good...).
Wig Wam Bam is the Only local music press that matters!!!
Carpetbaggers are not, by definition, from out of town--its what one does, not where one is from!!

The difference here (Emergenza) is that Hyperactive is bringing in National Acts, it seems they have some sort of screening process to weed out the shit bands that submit music, and they have local roots for the magazine.

You need the National Acts to bring attention to this town. It does no good to have a couple of good local bands that exist in a town that is separated from the rest of the world musically (and I'm not just talking ABQ. but any small town.) You have to make this town a stop on the touring circuit.

It's about quality not quantity..

Respect to all those who are here expressing their opinions and trying to build the scene in this town. I will say though, and this doesn't necessarily apply to anyone who dedicates effort to this site, if you want the scene in this town to improve, you must support other bands.

I know several "bands" who bitch and whine about how poor the music scene is in town, but the only time they ever go downtown is when they are playing a gig. Many don't even promote themselves...they think that the public should bow down to their awesomeness and wicked-ass "sloppy raw nut popping" two chord progressions...these bands are obviously not on rocksquawk so maybe I should save my breath.

If this scene is going to improve we all need to support eachother. My band mates and I typically spend at least 2 nights a week downtown -promoting, checking out bands, making noise and schmoozing with venue owners and bartenders...not including booking and playing our own gigs. Granted, many people may have domestic obligations, work, school, etc... But there is so much music going on in this town that there is no excuse to miss everything that is going on.

Anytime I hear anything about the quality of our scene I need to vent...so I'm sorry for being long winded. I guess what it boils down to is that I have immense respect for people like Levi Eleven, the guys from Left Brain and Mindy Set...only to name a few...who actually put noticable effort into building our scene and supporting each other. If we had more musicians with such dedication then perhaps we could have a festival here that rivaled SXSW. Until then, quit wishing, and make something happen.

Oh yeah...support healthy breasts on Saturday night at the El Rey. Cancer Benefit w/tons of great local bands. Only 5 bucks.

Right on. For example, we're the best band in the world.

Hyperactive is published locally and distributed nationally. The writers are from the SW and the focus is on SW music and up-and-coming "national" acts.

Hooks, I am assuming that you take part in creating Hyperactive Magazine. What exactly does your magazine consider a national act, and what is up-and-coming? I assume you mention these things because a local band is a local band, right? But can a local band be a national act as well. It might suprise you that there are a few national acts in Albuquerqe that this magazine is unaware of. Also, when I say national, I don't mean Old Man Shattered. I would in no way ever put down talent, some of the bands you guys showcase are really talented, including the above mentioned band. However, how has sounding like a mainstream band and playing in Albuquerque bars with the occassional music festival ever brought any more attention to a scene. Anyway, I am not trying to light a fire here, just discussing.
