Depends. If the midgets had nothing but their little arms and legs to fight with, then the lion would rip every single last one of them to shreds. If they had weapons of some sort, then the lion would lose.

Even if they did not have weapons, 42 is a big number. The lion could only eat or maul 1 or 2 at a time, that leaves 40 to pounce.

Pounce and do what? A punch or kick would only make the lion turn and maul them, and they probably wouldn't be getting up after even a single swipe. Only a handful could reach him at a time even if he were surrounded, and he could easily outrun them or knock them over and move to a better defensive position.

Better leverage, more mass, more speed... Lions kill things- they know what they are doing when they do it.

I suppose if unarmed it might depend on the arena. If they could corner him, exhaust him, then sure, they might drown him in their blood. Or if well and specifically trained.
