We're trying to come up with a new band name right now, which often leaves us rolling with laughter at some of the shit that comes out of our skulls. Some of the choice, funny but unusable suggestions have been things like Catch Rag and Hamwallet. It might have been the beer, but Hamwallet almost made me piss myself. Got any funny band names?

When we changed our name we did a contest and the list got to like 1400 names, seriously. Easily 500 of them were pure hilarious garbage, 500 just regular garbage, and the rest were taken already or sounded like they should have been metal bands (Scrotal Abortion- you can use that one of you want).

Check Google, myspace, godaddy (for the domain name) and there are a few band name registries online you can find too before you settle on something. Nothing lamer than a used name; it's better to have a bad name (in my opinion). I knew a band in high school who named themselves "Porno for Pyros" which besides being lame... did they think we wouldn't notice? Plus, think about being able to Google it: if your name is too vague or common nobody can find you.

No matter what name you pick you will think of something better like a week later and get tons of hate mail about your new name! Most of the hate mail will be from people who would have preferred you use their suggestion, and they won't ever let you forget it and will trot out the same tired reasons they dislike your name even a year or more after the fact. Something you think is funny, ironic, topical, hip, daring, etc will get so damn old after a while. So much fun!

This process has been uh, fun. Mostly we come up with stuff that is funny, but nothing that we take seriously. We are DEFINITELY making sure we don't take one that is taken. I want to avoid dealing with that embarassment again. We found one fucking killer metal band name that isn't taken, but that doesn't do us much good. Plus our drummer's girlfriend thought of it and promises to give me a Scrotal Abortion if I tell anyone. We have also thought up a great girl punk band name, The Underwires, this doesn't help us much either.

Oh ya, another one. The Shartists Formerly Known as Proletariat. We would go by this for a month or so, then change it to just The Shartists. Ha!

It's good to check to see if your band name is taken from time to time. So far, giranimals is still safe. But, just as an example, there are like 20+ Black Tooth Grins on myspace alone (nothing against you guys, just an example).

Ya, we thought Gilf would be totally free, but its the name of an all female folk/pop band. Another cool one was The Carcinogens, also taken by a countryish band out of Spokane, Washington. Fucking exhausting.

Hahahaha.... I knew that this would not go unnoticed!! It has been an open rant with the band since we got together and the singer bitches about it at every other practice, but I just can't get them to get on board with 'J5th & those other guys' LOL
