Ever seen a piece of equipement at a music store or in a magazine that just made you say......"Oh My God, thats fucking sweet"?

As a drummer there are drums out there that sound great and look great, even though I play a "Gretsch" kit I personally prefer "Sonor", sadly most of the shops here don't carry "Sonor" kits......I do own one but its one of their intermediate kits.....

In the current issue of "Modern Drummer" "Sonor" has come out with its newest line......."Sonor-SQ2"......Just incredible looks and sound....Even though I haven't heard one live I have heard sound clips of it.....

If my current "Sonor" sounds just as good as my big "Gretsch" I can't wait to hit the lottery to pick this one up!

So to you drummers, are there kits out there that make ya Drool?

John

I have owned and played a lot of drum kits, but the one I've had the longest and I always go back to is my 1953 round badge Gretsch kit. I am perfectly content with it. No new drums have ever grabbed me like this kit. Here is a pic:

<p>Now cymbals are a different story. They come and go for me. But, I always prefer thin dark ones.

Now thats an awesome kit......I agree with the sounds of "Gretschies", thus the reason why I ended up buying one......Love that classic white"...

But over all, I think my Gretsch has bee so versitile, I have played metal to pop to hard rock to reggae and its worked for all the different styles.....

Yeah, I'm the same with cymbals....I play mostly Zildjians but I have crossed to the dark side and bought some Sabians 2 years ago.....But with so many different styles of music I play my wife has cut off my cymbal allowance, so I'm at 22 cymbals now!!! Would be kinda cool to be able set them all up, Hmmmm, I think a cage might be a X-Mas wish for the list....

I have played on a lot of different kits my self from ludwig to pearl to yamaha, but so far my fav kit to date has got to be my Tama Superstar custom. this set has such a beefy tone and is so BIG sounding that i found myself hitting a little less so i could here the bass player. i am and will always be a zildjian player though. the only non zildjian i have is a sabian splash. it was 40 bucks i couldnt pass it up. i did have a yamaha stage custom that was an awesome kit but i love love love this tama. the kit that i do "drool" over though is a pork pie. wish i could afford one of those!

I'll start by saying that "Pearl" needs to stop making kits, but on the side of favorites, "dw" is the fucking grand master for me. I am not real impressed by "Pork Pie", "Tama" has some really nice new kits, but their sound quality has allways been medioker, I have allways liked "Yamaha" drums, great hardware, good looks, and good sound, "Gretsch" drums are nice but are not the best for rock, or harder stuff, "Mapex" is one of my other favorites, I sold my last one because it was to damn big, but it sounded great, "Ludwig",,,,,eh! "Sonar", cant really say much, never heard one, "Peavy" makes great sounding kits for studio, but they are pricey and not to pretty, "Premier" makes nice stuff to, if you can find it. Symbols, well, "Zildjian", "Sabian", "Paiste", they all make good and bad shit, you just gotta shop around for sound. "Vader" sticks for practice, and "Vic Firth" for show.

But yeah, your right, all the cymbal makers make good and bad crap.....I had some old crappy ZXT's that I bought long ago and was broke, I finally pulled them out and took them to work and had them water jetted and put vent holes in them, my 16" crash sounds pretty damn good now, kinda sounds like a fast crash/china, now its one of my favorites to play now!

As for sticks, I kinda flip flop from brand to brand but lately I been playing "Vic Firth 5BN Extremes" for my left snare hand and "Pro Mark 747 Rock" for my right hand....Love these new smaller sticks for the hi-hats an ride, they have such a nice bounce to them that I swear they flex an let me do some amazing things on my right hand........

You should hear how good that bitch sounds!

And yes, some of the very top end Pearl kits are nice, but if I'm gonna spend that much money, it aint gonna be no Pearl.

I play a Pork Pie kit, Paiste cymbals, Vater sticks, aquarian heads, Sonor snare drum, and use Mapex Hardware.

Scutt, all of those brands you mentioned, just like cymbals, have good shit and bad shit.

I play Paiste's because they're relatively inexpensive, sound great, but some tend not to put up to my punishment

For my money (assuming I had any) A Pearl Masters kit, a Yamaha Oak Custom or anything by Pork Pie, Premier or Orange County is where its at.

Mapex is rad, Saturns and Orions sound dope. Almost bought a Saturn before I got my steal... oops I mean "deal", on my Pork Pie.

Pacific's are decent kits, but the construction on them is fucking AWFUL. Everytime we'd get a Pacific kit in at Grandmas, when I worked there, there would be something wrong with them! The hoop would be stretched over the shell, the inside of the shell would be cracked etc... not a lot of care are put into those when they're being made.

and I used to play a Sonor. It's fuckin' fucked up now, but it lasted a long time and sounded great. AND it was a lower model Sonor. I think I paid 600 for it or something.

Mapex's hardware is sturdy as fuck and I love the rubber washers. I can't play with felt anymore because of those.

Mapex harware is some of the best I have ever seen, memory locks on everything, I have no reason to hate pork pie, they just seem a little pricey, and the only one I have really checked out is the green one Sid has at the studio, and it doesnt have suspended tom mounts, which I hate, it's a pretty kit though. I have tried Paiste's before and smashed right through the fucker's, and some of the real nice ones are real expensive. My kit is a PdP LX mapel, so far it's pretty bad ass, I know alot of the pacific kits are shit though, I seen em, but mine is one of the top line kits, it's no differend then a dw other than the lugs, all the other hardware is exactly the same.(and it was made in mexico) I sold my Mapex 8 peice mars series to get this kit, I hope it doesnt let me down. Confused

Now for my money, the new Yamaha has definately caught my eye, but, I'm am sworn to dw.

I was always partial to Slingerland or old Rogers kits as a young man. For the last 15 yrs or so I've played Yamaha Rock Tour Customs and a SOLID snare drum. These freaking things discontinued yrs ago and finding parts is a bitch, BUT they sound sweet. Put on some Aquarian Focus X heads recently and they have never sounded better. The DW9000 single pedal I use is also one of the best investments ever. Prefer Zildjan cymbals but broke down and bought a Sabian Paragon recently.

Drummers if you can, get a DW9000 pedal, I found mine for $185 at Grandma's Music. Wanted to buy a Axis but after lots of research I'm glad I got the 9000.

Drummer's rule, string players drool; or is vice versa?

I dunno mang. I've jammed with some pretty drooly drummers in my day... the worst are by far bass players though. Lotta saliva comin' from bassist's mouths. Hehehehe... Big Grin
