What Would Hüsker Dü? ![]() ![]() |
After a particularly nasty day watching people fight about politics, grammar and religion, I reckon it's about time for a drinky thread to lighten things up around here. I picked up a case of Sam Adams Brewmaster beers from Price Club yesterday, so tonight it will be a full bodied menagerie of Sammies for the Foodstamps household. It's nice to be able to have the Scotch Ale again, seemingly discontinued in our market. New to me is the Irish Red, which is quite good. I'm four deep into the case so far. Num Num Nummy. Anyone else partaking tonight?

In reality, I guess not. It was Sam's Club or Costco or something. Same thing, really. Either way, shitty prices on Malt Whisky. Supposedly, they are working on a Kirkland label of several different kinds of beer.

I have been drinkin Blue Moon with a slice of orange, it's really good shit.
On the harder side, I got a bottle of Johnny Walker's "Swing", for x-mas, and I finally opened it. Totally disapointed, it tasted like tobacco spit, and considering it was like $60 made it even worse. I think I will stick to single malt, glenlevet, or red breast. http://www.myspace.com/blacktoothgrinnm "I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. Fifths of JD from Smith's for $19.99. Not my favorite, but it'll do until my financial constraints get looser.

You know, RacerX, as far as Bourbon goes, JD is my least favorite. I'm more partial to Beam white label and Old Crow. $20 bucks a fifth is a good price, though.

Yeah, the Jack isn't great, but it's okay for on the cheap. I usually drink it out of a tumbler mixed to half-strength with spring water (okay, it's just purified city water). Bourbon & Branchwater is what us oldtimers call it.
Also, mixed with coffee & brown sugar, it's a Tennesee Coffee (instead of an Irish). Good band practice drink! <- Stun Guitar -> |

When I was 21 or so, not used to anything but beer, I poured myself about 10 oz of straight bourbon and drank that on top of the heavy buzz I already had. I don't remember all the vomit, or bashing my head against the bathroom towel rack, but my friends did, and I had the head wound to prove it. Up until about a year ago, i couldn't stomach the stuff, and really only drink it with Coke. Scotch, on the other hand, is a different story! I'm so sick of Islay malt! I can't wait for summer to get here so's I can enjoy some Presbyterians properly.

I usually order a Crown on the rocks or a Jack and Coke. Crown is a good sipping whiskey. I also like Basil Haydens but it's usually a bit pricey. I really prefer drinking the hard stuff over beer but I've been known to drink a Tecate or six.

More like flat on my back.
But yeah, I have occasional interweb access and can't resist checking stuff here. Further proof--I suppose-- of my questionable health situation. One day soon though... (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

In contrast to my usual IPA habit, I've been on a malt kick lately. Dopplebocks and Scottish Ales. Ayinger Celebrator has become one of my favorite beers, though honorable mention goes to Spaten Optimator and Paulaner Salvator, too. Really, anything with a name that ends in "ator" is probably worth trying.
About a week ago, I brewed my first dopplebock, too (which is also my second-ever lager of any kind). Partial mash: 8 pounds of grains, but also 8 pounds of LME. Most of that is Munich malt, of some kind. The original gravity was 1.088, and when I saw that digit keep repeating itself, I suddenly realized what its name shall be: "Eightyator." Oh hell yes! All of those are great beers for the winter! Also worthy of mention in this class is Sam Adams Double Bock, which I have not seen this season.
When's that gonna be ready? Keg or bottles? ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤ - ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`° www.myspace.com/theunemploid www.myspace.com/rageagainstmartinsheen |

It's at least two months away. Bottles. It sounds like you have another question too, and the answer is Yes. :-) "Had I'd know it'd end this way, I wish, I wish, I wish I'd brought those chains." -- 5MS |

Sloppy--
Those are some damn good beers! The Paulaner Salvator is an extremely old and celebrated recipe. Everything that ends "ator" is usually a tribute beer to the Salvator. Since I really dark ales et al and have to "drink on the cheap", the Red Hook ESB has been my staple for awhile now. |
