STP were from San Diego, but I guess their music was "grunge" like as opposed to Primus. Primus's popularity was peaking at the time grunge was becoming mainstream.

If ya'll get a chance look up a grunge era band called millions. They are hard to find but they're good. There are several current day bands on the web with the same name. Millions album was released in 93 from an independant label and is self titled.
