SO AC/DC will be selling their new album exclusively through WalMart link

What do you think about that?

I'm pretty sure I have enough AC/DC albums already, and can probably get away with skipping this one just like I have the last 8 years worth.

I was hoping from the headline for a more extreme selling out, like, "AC/DC to be renamed WAL/DC." This is an understandable if lame business decision. Now, if they were selling the OLD albums only through WalMart, I'd be up in arms.

Band of Horses Retain Ownership of Their Soul, Turn Down Wal-Mart Commercial

Memo to the Rock Daily comment crew: Rockers read your posts. At least, we think they do. A few months ago, Hot List honorees Band of Horses allowed Wal-Mart to use their song “The Funeral” in an Internet-only commercial. As BoH’s Ben Bridwell told In Forum, “We tested it with that Web site thing that I figured nobody would really even see. But in the Internet age, you can’t do anything without someone catching wind of it.” The gust was caught rather quickly, and the commerical was greeted with bile and anger from fans and people that post on sites like this one. The term “sell-out” was bandied about (it didn’t help that the commercial was for Wal-Mart, the maligned retail giant that slays mom-and-pop stores and monopolizes the Eagles). At least when Wilco got into the ad game, they sold their soul to Volkswagen. After the backlash, the proposal to turn the Internet commercial into a TV ad was declined by the band. Says Bridwell, “So once I saw our fans were let down by it, I nixed the TV commercial, and said, ‘You know what, this isn’t for me. Keep your money.’ ” A spokesperson for the band told Rock Daily that while the group is “generally pro-licensing,” they felt that Wal-Mart “was not a good match,” which means they could one day soundtrack Doritos commercials, à la Missy Elliott. The Internet ad featuring “The Funeral” has since been taken off the Wal-Mart Web site.

In other WalMart related rock news...

Legendary guitar company Gibson filed a patent-infringement suit against Viacom and Electronic Arts, the makers of 'Guitar Hero,' alleging that 'Rock Band''s unique controller and gameplay are currently covered by a Gibson patent. This news doesn't come as too much of a surprise. Earlier this month, Gibson alerted Activision that its 'Guitar Hero' game infringes on earlier Gibson patents, despite Gibson's licensing deals with 'Guitar Hero.'

Gibson also went on to file suit against retailers Toys 'R' Us, GameStop, Amazon, Wal-Mart and Kmart in order to halt sales of the hugely popular game. 'Rock Band' has been out for about six months now and the 'Guitar Hero' has been around for years, so we're wondering what took Gibson so long.

. . . ain't in Albuquerque, is it?

So Webby, I assume you cockrockers really do enjoy my contributions. Otherwise you'd simply delete 'em all. Sometimes it's good to have someone to hate, ya know? At least you guys aren't such losers that you have an on on the blog 24/7 like the Alibi. Talk about taking yourself too seriously. So pathetic. All kidding aside, the Alibi really IS littered with weenies, isn't it? It's been that way for years . . . . and this isn't just my opinion. I've talked to plenty of people around town who thinks the Alibi sucks and its writers are pretentious goobers. But I really do like the Alibi. I just don't think I'd like hanging out with most of the people who write for it. Ya know, too uptight.

I heard a rumour that my short short story was to be published in the last issue but Christie pulled it and made Amy rejudge the contest. True? I'm not disappointed, though; it's not like my contribution was this great work of genius. It was pretty good though. I wrote it at the last minute b/c another idea I had didn't gel. It's based on an actual experience I had (no, really) in which I continually dreamed I was waking up but was still in a dream. It was a harrowing experience.

So anyways, I actually appreciate that you guys censor me from time to time. It lets me know when I've crossed a line (according to your uptight standards). I now realize that thread about Jessica Carr went a little over the top. But it sure was funny, huh?

Really, are my contributions any more "pathetic" than the ones from people who do nothing you tell lame jokes ("YOU are the Walrus!")?

Thats why I play BC Rich. Not only have gibson guitars been crap since they quit handmaking them they have their heads up their own asses too. Of corse ever since BC Rich got handed down to the brat they came out with the shitty warlock line, the craftmanship of which gives koreans a bad rep. But mine was hand made in the custom shop. They still do that right. Its good to have friends that go to the NAMM show its actually affordable there.

Nah, they first accepted money in payment for playing their music in the '70s.

No shit RacerX. Dave made a dumbass comment and you set him straight. AC/DC sell out? How funny Dave. They never changed their musical M.O. to sell records. They continue to make the same crappy, straight-up rocknroll they always have. You don't know what you're typing about. Care to prove me wrong? AC/DC sold out in the 80's. State your case.

On the subject of WalMart, this is from a post on MelodicRock.com

Just a reason why more bands are hitting WalMart to sell their records, with everybody downloading songs on the net, bands ain't seeing too much revenue like the good old days.....And since WalMart is the big conglamo giant it is and is in virtually every city on the face of this earth, bands atleast on the finacial end of things don't seem to have a problem with it. And to tell ya honestly, I don't either....

LEFSETZ ON JOURNEY/WALMART:
Interesting comments from industry commentator Bob Lefsetz on the Journey/WalMart package earlier today. On the topic of disecting this week's Billboard chart positions, Lefsetz stated:
18. Journey "Revelation" Sales this week: 23,778 / Percentage change: -4% / Cume: 308,777
"And that's what it is! Not the incredible pipes of their Filipino lead singer, but the PRICE! Irving's (Azoff) the leader on this... He told me if Dave signed off on it, he was going to put out a Van Halen DVD for $7.99!
Maybe I'm talking out of school here, not that Irving said this was off the record, but this is a very important point. PRICE MATTERS! Stop weeping over the death of the CD, the declining margins, and just lower the damn price so music becomes an impulse item. Lower the price enough and it doesn't PAY to steal!
And you wonder why the established acts would rather go with Irving and Wal-Mart than Doug and Universal. Wal-Mart pays, the act gets the lion's share of the money and the customer is HAPPY!"
