What Would Hüsker Dü?

Posted
Has anybody heard Dave Mustaine lately? I know it's not cool (snicker) to make fun of the handicapped, but I just heard 99 Ways to Die.
Did he have a stroke or what?

I mean, who talks or sings like that without an affliction? Are we supposed to take that seriously?

This shit makes Hetfield sound artistic.

Hahahahahaha!!! I said the same thing the first time I heard that tune also! Here's the problem as I see it: Too many fuckin' rockstars start doing the heavy drugs and then they quit. Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Megadeth; all had incredible frontmen whose music was good. Then they start shooting up and the music really reaches new heights. Then they quit and their music suffers because of it. Something to be said for not starting the heavy shit in the first place.

Man, I dunno, Mike. I JUST HEARD Psychotron. Now, I have done some foolish things, stupid things, reckless and irresponsible things in the name of chemical recreation, but fuck. Now I remember why I quit listening to metal back in the late 80s.

You know, I really liked Megadeth back in the day. Way more than Metallica, but not as much as Slayer or Anthrax. But they lost me. Man, what an insult.

I don't know why some people dwell on personalities that left the metal scene so long ago. For every Dave Mustaine, there are ten new people who play metal that is every bit as good as anything he ever did.

It's great to listen to some of the old 'deth tunes, but instead of worrying about how much Mustaine started to suck, or wondering what ever happened to that "Metallica" band after 1991, just let them go. Megadeth and Metallica weren't the only bay-area thrash bands to leave in the early 1990s; they're just still on some people's minds because their trademarks are still being used for new products that your Clearchannel radio station will be happy to tell you about. But when people are talking about real music, I don't want to hear about these guys anymore, unless I also hear about Forbidden, Exodus, Heathen, Death Angel, Vio-lence, etc in the same breath.

And unlike Megadeth and Metallica, some of these bands are still relevant today, so you can talk about them without getting all misty-eyed and nostalgic. The reformed Exodus and Death Angel rock pretty fuckin' hard. (I think "Tempo of the Damned" is one of the best thrash albums in recent years.) And somewhat younger SF-area thrash bands like Imagika will break your neck too, so it's not all just about the "old guys." And that's just the SF thrash scene -- there's so much more happening in the world of metal overall, that the myopic focus on arbitrary has-beens is really demented.

Oh, no. I'm not gonna let them get off the hook that easy. You bring up some good points, though. I like where this conversation is going-GAH. ALso, I am not myopi-KAH, I am Myawstigmyati-KUH.

Although they are not what I consider to be a metal band (some people do, which is TRULY demented), Poison's recent attempt at being a Rage Against The Machine-esque political lefty-foo activist band was quite a spectacle.
