Can't agree with you on that one. I like dance music, but this shit is just overly repetitive and boring.

I freelance (reviews and interviews) for a couple of music magazines, so I am constantly getting recommendations from my editors, other writers, and publicists (Roll Eyes). I try to read a lot of music websites, record store email lists (Aquarius!), and blogs looking for new leads. I did a fair amount of touring with my old bands, and am the kind of guy who stays in touch with the bands and people I met along the way. I get some good recommendations from those folks, too. I am on a couple invite-only torrent sites that always have quality leaks and lots of great records from underground bands. If you do torrent stuff, send me an email or PM and I can hit you up with an invite to one of my favorites.

I also have a ridiculously short attention span. So that Black Mountain album which we all had this time last year had lost some charm (to me) by March. Still one of the best albums of the year, but my brain was already asking for more music and I have to feed the beast.

I don't do these, but my buddy does and he sent me the new Animal Collective that's not out yet. Have you heard that one, n8? It's pretty incredible. I'm sure it'll be on a lot of best of '09 lists.

Heh... I'm listening to it right now. "My Girls"... man! What a great song.

Having seen the band a long time ago when they made piles of noise, it's really cool to have watched them refine their sound over the years and actually pull songs out of that pile.

Aquarius is a great resource. Too bad I never buy anything from them. Maybe one day.

I only recently realized that they have MP3 samples from most of the new releases on their website as well.

A problem I have is getting so hung up on one or two albums, that everything else gets drowned out. Freaking Regina Spektor has been my top played album for like 2 years. Sad.

Plus, I've been living under a rock the past year, so one of my favorite groups--Portishead--came in and I didn't even catch it. Crazy thing is, I have a friend who writes reviews for Amazon and happened to have burned it for me months ago and I didn't even know it. I just got around to listening to it this week.

Most of the new albums I listened to this year were local releases. Ya Ya Boom's Isn't Pretty rocks mightily. Supergiant's Antares shook me up pretty good. We Were Born As Ghost's Brightly Brightly And With Beauty gave me weird dreams. Etc etc.

Ya, so? Just because it's mainstream doesn't mean it sucks... Have you actually listened to these albums? Or are you so shortsighted that you associate suck with name?
