I don't see that these have been posted/discussed here yet, but I'd like to see everyone's best of '07 lists. Rather than just blurt them out off the top of your head, let's post them all this Friday, December 21 so you have time to put them together. Very curious to see what records people are into in Albuquerque this year.

I have a top 20 list that I had to turn in to a magazine I work for, but feel free to put up however many you want. Albums, songs, debuts, live shows, bourbons, etc...

Looking forward to seeing the lists. Thanks!

in no order:

Tokyo Police Club - Smith
The Rakes - Ten New Messages
The Ponys - Turn the Lights Out
Dethklok - The Dethalbum
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
The Fever - In the City of Sleep
Sunshine Underground - Raise the Alarm
The Cribs - Men's Needs, Woman's Needs, Whatever
Reverend and the Makers - The State of Things
New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom
The Natural History - People that I Meet

I can't believe how many reissues and old albums I got this year. It'd be three times this list. Guess I'm slippin'.
Other than Ponys and Arctic Monkeys, the rest I got since October. I thought this year sucked until just recently.
I included no locals, so as not to hurt feelings Roll Eyes but there were at least three I strongly considered pissing the rest of you off for. I'll bet you can guess.

I thought 2007 was a great year for music. I had lots of alternates that got bumped as I rearranged and shifted this list over the year. The Jarvis Cocker album just got bumped after I heard the Burial album a few weeks ago.

I want to list some shows here in a bit, but I need to run off to meet the in-laws for breakfast.

Here are my Top 20 Albums of 2007:

1. Deerhoof: Friend Opportunity (Kill Rock Stars)
2. Grinderman: Grinderman (Anti-)
3. Pissed Jeans: Hope for Men (Sub Pop)
4. Battles: Mirrored (Warp)
5. Liars: Liars (Mute)
6. Panda Bear: Person Pitch (Paw Tracks)
7. Oakley Hall: I’ll Follow You (Merge)
8. Ponys: Turn the Lights Out (Matador)
9. Burial: Untrue (Hyperdub)
10. Circle: Panic (Ektro)
11. Black Lips: Good Bad Not Evil (Vice)
12. Magik Markers: Boss (Ecstatic Peace)
13. Clockcleaner: Babylon Rules (Load)
14. Animal Collective: Strawberry Jam (Domino)
15. Turzi: A (Kemado)
16. Boris and Michio Kurihara: Rainbow (Inoxia)
17. Deerhunter: Cryptograms (Kranky)
18. Baroness: Red Album (Relapse)
19. Okkervil River: The Stage Names (Jagjaguwar)
20. The Besnard Lakes: Are the Dark Horse (Jagjaguwar)

Me neither. Except Baroness. They kick ass; i saw them play in a basement around the way a few years ago. They blew my mind. I've got a couple of their ep's; heavy stuff.

It must have same number and length of tracks? iTunes and Roxio use gracenote to look up discs -about gracenote. When we got our last disc I put it in a computer right away so that I could submit the info to Gracenote myself- our previous disc was submitted by who knows and pops up with misspellings and other mistakes in any computer anywhere ever.

Really? Well, you're a metal guy, right? Most of the stuf on my list is pretty indie rock this year. You'd definitely be into the Baroness album. Grinderman is a Nick Cave side project that is total rock. To quote a friend, Pissed Jeans are "an unholy combo of Flipper + Black Flag." You'd probably like the Clockcleaner album. Super heavy. And you haven't heard of Boris? That's surprising as they've gotten pretty big in the last couple of years. You must check them out. They genre flip on nearly every release, but at their heart they are absolute heavy Japanese carnage. Check out their album Pink.

Glad you like it, Baterista. Another metal album I really liked was Radiance of Shadows by Nadja. Super thick, loud doom made by two Canucks.

If you're into the grind stuff, check out The Funeral March by Gadget. It may have come out in 2006, but I listened to that one a lot in '07, as well.

I'd really like to see some other people's lists. I really have no idea what kind of music people are into in this town besides mainstream metal.

i don't know how to quote, and i'm too tired to figure it out... but this is in response to n8.

damn. i forgot about grinderman and black lips. the clockcleaner album is good, too. good list, guy. i should've made mine a top 20... but then i'd have to include albums that just shouldn't be on there for the sake of filling the spots. lists are fun.

Totally.

That Health album was great, too. I used to play down the hall from Clip'd Beaks in Oakland and was never very impressed by the music coming through the walls, but I like everything else on your list, so I'll guess I'll have to check out how their record sounds.

Whether you thought the year dragged by, or if you spent it in a drug induced haze and it flew by for you, rocksquawk threads were a fun bunch and had some gems. There was hippie bashing, Ralli's Bashing, Leiber bashing, Stu grumbling (which consequently led to stu bashing), and some great moments where everyone got together and participated in a group hug. Here are my top General Chatter threads of 2007 in no distinct order---

1. Embarassing Album Collection-- That's a thread with some great humility, as well as posts by some of our most dedicated rocksquawk personalities.
2.Are you Drunk?--- Sorry to leave the Mormons and AA members out of this one, but the answer seemed to be "yes, the rest of us are drunk, and we like it". Alcohol and music are a fine pair, and though I do not endorse becoming an alcoholic, I do suggest we should all become a bit stewed and allow the words to flow more freely, others to become a bit more attractive, and work to go by a bit quicker... what?... you don't drink at work?... hmmmm, maybe I do have a problem...
3. Pro Gear/Pro Gear Intervention-- These two recent threads have us drawing the line between the pros and the amatures, as well as getting something stuck in Black's craw that I've never seen stick like that before. If you can rile that man up after all he's been through, you've done something right.
4. BET awards-- There's nothing like having some cracker-white city discussing race issues. Fortunately, most of us seem to be a bit more accepting than 'persyns' in other cracker-white towns in which I've lived. C-Matt and WEG make an appearance, and a newbie gets his feelings hurt... awwww...
5. Smoking Ban (x3)-- Nearly three threads discussed smoking in bars. Love it or hate it, you'll still be able to consume as many cigs as you want if you try hard enough. Sorry smokers...
6. Fuckin' Drummers-- Yes, the question of the nature of the drummer is pondered. Philosophical and psychological in scope, the soul of drummers are revealed to us in full for the first time by the expanse of responses from drummers and non-drummers alike. The secret of sitting comfortably on those little stools, however, remains hidden by their cultish and near Mason-like culture!
7. Chevelle Gear Stolen/White Stripes Cancelled-- Ah, some of the longest and most useless threads start when talking about the national acts. Nothing polarizes like success and money, and those band have both. Also we touched on mental disorders as well as gear, and to be sure the gear in discussion was most certainly of the Pro variety.
8. Name My Band-- So many names, and I was hoping it would be funny or catchy or better than what was announced as the final decision of Volume Volume. The new name has much less to do with Hell, and hence less with Rock n' Roll, than VV, though you know what you're getting into in regards to decibels during live shows or the implied suggested listening levels for the album. Actually, I'm not being fair, because the novelty thing would make me laugh, but they are no novelty act, and VV does get you into the "V" category at the music store, and there's little competition for being noticed should you make it past "T" section in Pop/Rock.
9. Best ABQ Band of All Time-- So much name dropping in this one you'll think you've been reading a David Allen Coe-influenced lyrics sheet. The anticipation to see your band's name, the jealous surging of your blood not seeing your band mentioned while others, clearly inferior to your band, are, and the soure-grapes-like "screw them" attitude you develop to keep youself from crying all fill the more sensitive and unadjusted of us, and it helps keep away the assholes from this blog like the cat smell keeps away the rats. It's a great look at some current and some long forgotten bands, and it should become apparent to everyone we had/have a fantastic city for music.
10. Band Tee-Shirts-- Coolness. We want it, but we can't act like we want it if we want to be cool. You can't define cool, but you know what it is. You are cool, and everyone else is much less cool. Oh, you're not cool, you say? That's because not being cool is cool now. Don't even care about coolness?... that's the definition of cool! Yes, the good Captain tries to tounge-and-cheek his his way into the mentality of the band shirt, and many take it too seriously. Great thread where nearly everyone is right and everyone else is wrong... just like the nature of our politics in this country right now! Sadly, our Captain has made it back here much less frequently after that little bit, and we miss you, sir.

What does 2008 have to offer? Surely more first timers will get their feelings hurt, more bashing (but hey, it's for your own good, makes you tougher), and someone claiming to be part of the next big thing that will impress all of us so much we'll quit playing music and devote our time and energy to promoting the greatest band in Albuquerque will grace our blog for, maybe, 2 posts, and our venues with 0 gigs. Will Leiber re-appear from being able to use a computer from beyond the bars?...Will people go on thinking that WEG is a real person?... Will bands sign up for forums only to never use them? Keep coming back and find out! Thanks for the fun times, squawkers, and Happy New Year!
