what about local grrrls?

christina from elephant led an astounding change in the band from sludgerock to brilliant pop just before they split up.

i used to love the eyeliners until they pretty much stopped being a local band and pretty much started singing the same song over and over but what the hell-- i'm glad they're doing well and aren't making subway sandwiches for a living.

the times when rachel heisler got her shit together with her band dusted, it was snappy pop that broke your heart. technically she had one of the better voices in town.

rachel from karen. as with a lot of experimental noise or whatever you call it, some nights it didn't work but when it did, they amazed. i miss karen.

the roxiehearts are the sucessor to the red aunts' bent and battered rocker princesses crown...
and don't forget cara & melissa got their start in ben hathorne's hopefuls. he told me it was his cold calculated concept to put together an inexperienced all-girl band to back him. it worked. his originals were great and their cover of can't explain was the best.

Those are pretty good lists.

Hey, can anyone get me a copy of any Elephant stuff? they were the first local band I ever saw, when I moved here the first time in.. shit- was it really that long ago? And I never owned any. I'm curious if they are as good as I remember.

Also: Slant 6. Yodaspells (or anyone), do you have Soda-Pop Rip-Off? I've had my copy lost twice now, and it's a bitch to find (I got the last one in Omaha). Would trade a copy of the singer's other band, Autoclave. I also lost my copy of Inzombia. I'm not as interested in replacing that (Sod pop is a perfect classic in my mind) but if anyone has one, I'd still like it. I also have a few tracks of The Casual Dots (another project with some combo of those members) and would like to get a full album, and/or is willing to burn that off with the Autoclave disc, and also: the Slant 6 track off the Dischord anniversary comp. for any of the shit I am missing. I know I could do Ebay or something, but I'm broke as shit*

There are still a million holes in those lists though. Sleater-Kinney, The Soviettes, Patti Smith, The Runaways, Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, Sahara Hotnights (the Jennie Bomb album at least) I could go on all day.
rachel in my band is the best though.
I'm uncomfortable labeling bands as "chick bands." Because it gives the impression that they are less/differently valid somehow.I never like or dislike a band just because there are girls in it.
I love the female voice though, almost always better than the dudes.

Oh shit- Juliette & the Licks.
Has anyone heard them? It's Juliette Lewis's band, and I usually avoid movie star bands but they really do sound good. If you like PJ Harvey, but with more raw kinda L.A. rock sounds...

* I will, however, find lots of money somewhere if anyone has anything by Victor Banana/Neil Smythe/Tim Hensley

Yeah, that's just a fucking fact. She rocks harder than most any guy in town. Rachel is cool as shit.

I (again) toss in Michelle from Shine Cherries. I think she's amazing. They are a great band in general, but she makes me feel utterly worthless.

Sorry. Haven't gotten the hang of that quote thing. But I totally agree with Levi. I went to make a list, but didn't post it cuz it just felt wierd. I mean, we wouldn't do "favorite male musicians" or "favorite (insert ethnicity here) musicians." But damn, that's a hard one. Because it's about time female musicians started getting respect for more than their booty.

My life is loosely based on a rough sketch that's been partly erased.
My tracks are easy to trace - signs of panic and wreckage all over the place.

Evrything after Safari was kinda weak, though that Title TK was alright. I don't think "how could you not" is working for me though. It ain't like this is going to press or being made into a plaque. I notice you aren't trying to get Belly or Throwing Muses any respect.

Still...how could no-one mention Bikini Kill?
Fuck you people.

My vote for favorite male musician: David Byrne.
My vote for favorite white musician: David Byrne.
My vote for best female voice in music: that dude from the Darkness.

Oh! I like the Raincoats too, and Elastica!

Penelope Houston, Suzi Quattro, and how did anybody forget to mention Ms. Wendy O? If that bitch hadn't offed herself she'd be eatin' Siouxsies and shittin' Sineads, swabbin' her starfish with Ani Difranco. Gotta give ya Chrissy though, sexiest damn voice in rock 'n' roll. Ooo ya make me wanna....

Yes! Too bad she's already quasi-famous. No one wants to take her seriously, though she merits it.

On that note, have you heard Mini Driver's alt.country project? I forget what they're called, but from what I've heard she's quite talented as well.

Also, I have the same birthday as Deborah Harry. And together we are Captain Planet.

Squawk on.

LEVI -
You can still order new re-mastered copies of "Soda Pop-Rip Off" from Dischord for $10.00

"Inzombia" is out of print - F'n unbelievable.

Bilotte's other group QUIX-O-TIC is pretty sweet tunes Christina rocked with her sister who is now in White Magic (Drag City)

You can get Elephant Cd's from Joe Anderson - he has both albums.

Oh, with the mention of Autoclave - we cannot forget HELIUM. Mary Timony rules.

local grrrls rule - here's a blast from the past: BOLSHEVIK BETTY AND THE BADKNOCKS - Dave from Scared of Chaka played drums for them...

MARLO MANOR was a short and sweet 4 piece until they broke up.

Rachel's DUSTED was a very good band indeed.

I never got to see KAREN - damn. Is it the same Rachel in ROMEO?

Said I wasn't going to do this, must ... resist ... urges ...
how did no one get to Bjork? I know she doesn't rock per se, but she's badass. And so is Missy Elliot. And so is the girl from the Dresden Dolls. And Tsunami bomb. Peejers (PJ Harvey) is my fav though. Special props to Juliette Lewis for covering a PJ song in "Strange Days" and making it better than the original, which is hard to do.
