It's a bar that lets just about any local band have a chance to play. There is a P.A., a Soundman and electricity (sometimes). Did I mention it's also a bar? With booze?

How could a place like that suck? Sounds like a good deal to me.

Two Words - "Jesse Blue" Eek

P.S. We've played their 10+ times and it's always an adventure. Especially, when your bassist lands up in jail the night of the show.

I have to agree with the "it's always an adventure" thing. Can't remember if J.B. ever worked when we played there. Then again, we haven't played there all that much, but we have had to deal with incarceration within our organization quite a few times. But hey- the show must go on.

playing/going to the atomic always has it's ups and downs. some shows have been great, some have been empty. sometimes the sound is great, sometimes it's not. sometimes the show is fantastic, sometimes you get tommy lee's sister's band opening up for el ten eleven. sometimes there's sketchy dudes, sometimes there's great folks. i met my future wife after a coma recovery show at the atomic.

im not looking for validation as to it sucking or not...

im trying to figure out why people dont come to drink at my bar. i see burts kicking our ass regularly with shows and dj nights. when burts has a slow night...ours is slower...

i dont get why bands play at burts all the time and not the atomic...i know with certain cats its bacause im an asshole about stage volume...but remember those 2 words from the left brain guy above and another word..."STU"...there HAVE been worse!!!

be honest...i can handle a good shitting on...

im not goig to come back at anybody for anything said cause i have my reasons for thinkin why things are the way they are there...i just would like input from others as to what everyone else thinks...

thanks,

THE sound nazi

I love Atomic and respect the vibe and personalities that it hosts. Burt's has more seating, that's the only difference.

From seeing the lineups at the Atomic over the past coupla years, I kinda assumed you had decided to concentrate on being the Punk bar in town - I very rarely see metal booked there - so perhaps I'm mistaken, but that was my impression.

That said, we do require a certain amount of stage volume, especially me because I need to crank the power tubes to get my sound. However, at smaller rooms like you & Burt's, we usually ask the sound person not to mic the rigs/drums for that reason - the PA can then be used to push the vocals exclusively.

At any rate, with my hand all smashed up, we won't be playing out any time soon - May at the earliest, but if you'd have us, SANDIA MAN would certainly play at the Atomic, ideally with bands that have a similar sound.

Dunno how many people care about this and if it really matters to the attendance, but Burt's has much better beer selection.

A couple years ago Atomic finally started carrying Bridgeport IPA for when I want some hops, and that was really cool, but the last time I was in there, they were either out or had stopped selling it. But Burt's has that beer too, plus sometimes other IPAs as well (e.g. Stone Ruination). A bar should always have something on hand for the hopheads. This is fucking America, dammit. :-)

But then when I want malt instead, Burt's has McEwens Scottish Ale, which maybe isn't in the same league as most doppelbocks but it's an acceptable substitute. Atomic has nothing like that at all. If you're at Atomic and want some malt, going next door (or further on to Chama) is simply all you can do.

Hope this helps. I like Atomic.

it can be incredibly difficult to get in touch with leonard sometimes, so booking shows there can be difficult.

The reason 5MS doesn't play Atomic is that we are too big for that place. I mean seriously, our guitar player is 8 feet tall and has to duck when he is on stage.

The only thing I ever disliked about Atomic was how much of an asshole Miguel(bartender) can be.
Of course, last time I was in that place was 2 years ago.

This is 90% the reason why no one I know goes in there. The other 10% is that one of them South American door guys creeps out the ladies.

i think people disliked working w/ JB because if he didn't like your act, he didn't give a shit about doing your sound right (my observation).
Most bands didn't like me because i am a dick, but i never got any negative feedback as to how i did my job (save the drunken audience members, and they don't count, ICKY).
I am sure people complained, but it never got to me, which is unfortunate, i GUESS.
I appreciate those of you that supplemented my wages at the end of the night, i remember all of you.

i was a big dick when it came to stage volume, that's why i ran most everything through the house to insure that everything could be monitored and so amps didn't need to be so loud that no one wanted to be in EITHER room (not that many turned down)
the fact is that room is set up in a way that makes volume difficult to discern/control, as most bass waves were off stage before they were at head level, so bassists always turned up louder and louder.
guitarists cannot abide by the bass being so much louder than them and on and on .
Unless the room was full of people, almost EVERY rock band was too loud to be comfortable in the live room OR the bar.
The fact is 99% of people don't go to a show to incur permanent hearing damage, and few bands ever recognise that.
