Why doesn't anyone make a compliation (spelling?) cd of all the local bands or those at least on Rocksquawk? Since, work is slow, a couple of us at work surfed ever bands myspace page or homepage and jammed to at least one their tunes. I have that Romeo Goes to Hell song stuck in my head currently. But that'd be a great cd. Well I'm just venting right now, but the idea got me so excited I couldn't contain myself.

There are LOTS of compilation CDs out there. Rock Outside The Box is the one that instantly came to mind. Volume 1 was released like 4 years ago. Volume 2--a double disc--was released last year. Both are really great.

They sell them on CD Baby. But it's probably better to buy them from the bands.

Incidentally, I found a copy of ROTB Vol 1 in a box of junk in storage this past weekend.

I would put one together if bands were interested. Just throwing out numbers here 15 bands divided by approximately $1500 for replication costs would equal about 100 bucks a band. That would give each band 66 cds to sell. If you sell each cd for 10bucks the bands can make $660. The cds would be 8 page full color cool stuff.

Who’s in??? Nunchuk is down so that’s one band.

IT's a cool idea, i was thinking the same thing a while back with some different bands on myspace but ran into the problem of having to have forms from every band to release the right to that song.. also the cd would have to be mastered to make the eq and volumes match from song to song. (more $$$) it became too much of a headache and I didn't have time to deal with it so I bailed... but if you're up for the task, yeah SuperGiant is down!

I'd go with a celebrity producer. Maybe Sid Garcia.

Ok, Sid what would you charge us? For right now lets just say 15 songs, from 15 different bands.

I understand a lot of bands wouldn't want to do it because they might lose out on personal CD sales. I'd put it together if bands were willing. It doesn't hurt to try. Rocksquawk CD would be killer.

I don't think it would hurt bands I think it would help them. They would have at least 14 other bands spreading their music around to a bunch of new fans. Who may have never heard their music before.

One song typically takes around an hour or so to master. My rates are $38/hr, so somewhere around there.

Kinda depends on how much work is involved. Obviously I can't make a home recording sound like Santa Fe Center.

I can also ask a friend of mine, David Cain up at Shark Fin Mastering. He's done some great work for both me and John Wall in the past. If he gets some free advertising he might cut us all a deal.

I'm down with whatever sounds good. I don't want this to turn in to a "him versus me" kinda thing. If there's something I can do to help, great!

Price is important so we keep the cost down but more so quality is very important.
Black recommended The Final Sound look below for their prices I found on their site. That’s a pretty good deal, and Black Maria highly recommends them.

“The Final Sound charges a flat rate for each track mastered on projects having 10 or fewer tracks. For CD-length projects of 11 or more tracks (up to 80 minutes of audio), the total cost is $360. There are no additional or hidden costs (rates in US dollars):
• 1-10 Tracks:
• 11+ Tracks: $35 each
$360 for full album (up to 80 minutes of audio)”

I just looked up prices with Nationwidecd.com and 1000 cds 8 page cd full color, barcode sticker, etc. Also comes with 300 color 11x17 color posters with shipping and everything comes to $1555.00. So add that with the $360 from The Final Sound Mastering and we get a grand total of $1915.00. Divided by 15 bands equals $127.66, so if each band put in $130 bucks we could easily cover the costs.

Anything else I’m forgetting? Artwork, I’m sure we can put that together for free.

Well, I’m convinced this can be done fair easily. We just need bands to participate. I totally wouldn’t mind driving this thing and doing the coordinating. Just let me know who’s down, we got to get some big hitters participating to help make it a success. I can send out some emails this weekend and ask bands specifically, but for those of you interested let me know. If I can get 15 bands together than I’ll look at moving it to the next steps: Collecting music, look for some sponsors, get the money together, advertising and getting appointments made for mastering, replication and so forth.

So far looks like we got
Nunchuk and Super Giant interested or at least the only two who said they were for sure interested… we only need 13 more.

If you get the right sponsors it might not even cost the bands anything... and perhaps we could get more than 1000 made. it's nothing for a company to throw down $500 or $1000 for sponsorship 'advertising' logo .... could put a bunch of sponsor's logos on the back of the disc case or something.
