Not only can I provide a few answers, but I can shamelessly self-promote. Space Maybe is at 309 Mountain NE, and I think that's near broadway and mountain. This saturday will be:

Oktober People
Of God and Science
The Grave of Nobody's Darling

All Ages!

Music starts at 8. Not sure of the cover, but it's most likely low enough even for you cheap bastards.

I sent an email to the alibi contact address about the missing flyer which disappeared from the Flyers on the Wall sometime in the last 24 hrs. Thought you worked for them?

We played there last night and the overall impression I had of the place was positive. The PA is a bring your own or borrow the one that someone from a friend of the space brings that may or may not be what you need. The horns seemed to be blown on the PA that was there, so a monitor was turned around towards the crowd. The vocals ended up being a bit lower in volume because of that, but it still sounded decent. The sound is BRIGHT, and Jill couldn't hear anything but her drums on stage, while I was able to hear everything being slightly closer to amps/monitor and a bit further from the cymbals. You don't have to push the volume in that place to be heard. Also, this isn't around anything that would produce foot traffic, so if you don't bring a crowd, there won't be one. There's a moderate sized area in front of the stage, but the house has plenty of chairs and another room and hallway so it could accomodate larger crowds or people having conversations while the bands played (blasphemy!). I hope this place stays in business, because it's one of the better all-ages places to play. The parking is limited. Also, just a side note, please, if you're under-age, don't drink there and get the venue in trouble. Shows will end early enough for you to go home and raid your parents stash. The large amount of writing on the walls gives the place a slight feel of craziness, or at least what I would imagine a house would look like if a bunch of gutter punks lived there and decorated. There were several things that came up throughout the night that had one or more person saying, "shit, I would have brought that if I'd known we'd needed it." so bring plenty of extention cables, long mic cables, maybe your favorite stand and mic, power strips, and some paper towels (you'll know why you need those when it happens). The guys from Of God and Science went back to their place to grab some lights (there was only one flourescent strip above the band as the light... yikes!), so that may be something you want to do if the bright, white light doesn't match the 'mood' you're trying to invoke. Overall, I'd encourage any band to at least try it out and hopefully the word will spread about this place through the all-ages community and, for the bands, be a compliment to the bars and that experience.

Yep, the venue was cool and the gig was alotta fun. Reminded me of this gutted out old house down in the south-ish valley that I would go to see shows when I was in highschool - talk about weird dejavu vibe.

I hope it stays open - cool little all-ages joint.

Cool

Good to know. We (The Zots) are going to be playing there on July 1st.

I remember going to all ages venues when I was a kid. Now it's time for me to give a little back.

Musky,
That was a damn fine review. Those were the kinds of details that really matter for a decent show. Thanks.

Ya, it was awesome. We booked another show there b/c it was so much fun. In all honesty, sketchy places like this one are the types of venues that "separate the men from the boys" as it were. Your band can be a bunch of babies and complain about there not being this or that, or they can just suck it up, play, and have fun.

Hmmmm...My keyboard player went there last night after work to scout the place out. It seems like the Mountain Rd. location was shut down by the cops. We haven't been informed of another venue for the gig on Sunday.

Something's a little shady about this place...

Well. It IS run by youngin's, with zero capital it seems. You can't expect that hard-core professionals. Really though, hasn't damn near every place been hassled by the cops at this point?

They have a business licence and zoning permits and all whatever of that shit: on paper they are legit legally. They still get hassled by neighbors and fire marshalls and cops the same (more probably, since we all know cops hate teenagers) as The 'pad or anywhere, and I doubt they have as much knowledge of the law or access to those who do as other establishments.

So if you were expecting complete, total un-shadiness you must be thinking of some other venue (maybe other town).

I doubt it'll last forever, that's a serious uphill battle they have (not even taking into account soundsystem or lighting or maintaining the cooling system, etc - I mean legally and community acceptance). Our time there was cool though. With the right promo and word-of-mouth it could be a great alternative to Sol-Arts or other wannabe all-ages spots that have left me feeling lacking. It certainly has a DIY/punk legitness as opposed to the hippy/drama department/studio/owner's: "let's pat the kiddies on the head" feel that doesn't do it for me in most local all-ages crapholes (no offense to any crapholes, I love crapholes).

Think of it like a house party in a crazy house back when you were young. By that standard it is much LESS shady than some shows I've done.

The cops came to the show we played there, but they just hung out and listened to the music-they didn't hassle anyone. Actually, I think they just wanted to flirt with the girl who lives there (they were layin' on the cop stache charm pretty heavy).

Well... I wouldn't book any gigs there. They moved venues then canceled the show at the last minute.

I'm for all ages venues, but this is a little ridiculous.
