I haven't done it before, but have pitched in parts for friends. I am going to give it a shot next month. If nothing else, it's a kick in the ass to improve my poor, sad, pathetic recording skills.

Seems like a cool idea. But what stops a band from working on an album all year and then submitting it to the contest?

Seems a little odd to me. Most bands could easily record an album in 28 days - but what are the standards? Could I record 35 minutes of drum solo on my cell phone and be elidgible?

I think they may be on to something, but it just seems seems way too broad to be a legitimate challange...

I was thinking the same thing. 28 days seems like plenty of time to me, esp. if you already have material ready to go like we do.

Record an album in 24 hours! That would be a better contest... Still a really cool idea though.

According to the official challenge rules on the site, you're supposed to write and record an album in 28 days. That does not seem so easy to me. Dave and Jeremy, there is no way they can police whether you actually wrote and recorded the songs during February, but if you cheated then that just means you're a tool and missed the whole point, right?

But aren't most musicians and people in bands tools?

It would be more fun to do with with a spontaneously formed collaboration.

Impose a creative constraint. On Feb 1 they tell you, "Ok, all the songs have to be about farming. Go!"

That's a cool idea. Then tell them what instrument they can use.

Musical saw, double violin, gong, piano and french horn.

And part of that 24 hours would be having to go out and find the named instruments from friends, pawn shops, family, wherever. I like this idea.

or really frustrating if you dont really know some of the people enough...

if either of my bands had a whole month off from our day jobs and had a rehearsal/recording studio for that whole time...that means lock out for the whole 28 days...yeah i KNOW we could write and record a whole 10 song album.

now mastering and duplication, artwork and all the other prodution is another thing...

So I'm really into this idea

record an album in 24 hours
pick the people you want to be part of the project
at say 12pm Saturday each group gets an email with the theme for the album and what instruments can be used.
12pm Sun. everyone submits their album.

anyone else?

I'm in too.

Back to the collab thing. How about: You can't make the album with anyone you know (by face).[or at least with others you've never played with]

Anyone else in?

How about you can't play with anyone you have been in a band with before? All new people, ok if you know them by face.

or How about different bands making an album in a different genre.

Dirty Novels - Death Metal

Black Maria - Brit Pop

Anethesia - Country

Le Chat - Doom

Gracchi - Bluegrass

etc.
