OK, now we're getting into it. I think this post represents the excitement we've all been waiting for around here - the music our kids are into! The CHILDREN! It's all about the children!

If you could talk to a girl without getting out your credit card, you might someday realize why we are proud to be parents. |

Hey Maury, I heard the Evens put out a kids album a few years ago. Do you know if that's true?

just going by what parents come into the store to buy, IROC Mike is right. world beat and reggae are pretty big sellers. they might be giants and johnny cash, too (their respective children albums). one guy came in with MAYBE a 4 year old and bought the brat a Burzum record. blew me away. that dad is breeding a black metal drone or something.
that is all ryan |

The Evens did a 1 song for Pancake Mountain a few years back. Great band and I've been a fan of Amy Farina since The Warmers.
I recently enjoyed the book/CD Dog Train: A Wild Ride on the Rock-and-Roll Side. |

I wish my kid liked good music. He makes me play "I Got No Strings" from Pinocchio like 50 times in a row every day. Is he trying to tell me something?...

My daughter likes a couple of the slower Slayer tunes. I obviously don't let her listen to stuff she's not *ready* for, but I try not to censor too much. She really likes the Zeppelin and the Doors, and if a song has any "historical" or "literary" significance that I can provide background on, she makes a connection with the story being told. "Battle of Evermore," by Zeppelin, and "Flight of Icarus," by Iron Maiden are but two good examples. Plus, our two hanging succulents are named Icarus and Daedelus, so she makes a connection there. Her personal listening choices are typical for an 8 year old girl: Hannah Montana, Disney compilations, the Wiggles, Raffi, etc.,.
Also, if you RS parents aren't aware, The Children's Hour (KUNM, 89.9, Saturdays at 9am) is a great program. Siobhan listens to this program religiously, and even if she's at the grandparent's house, I still tune in occasionally. Mr. bl0cks, sir, you make a good observation about the world beat/reggae, and hit the nail on the head with They Might Be Giants. My little one digs the sounds, and I have been amiss in neglecting to expose her more to TMBG. I'm gonna purchase a couple of their records for my daughter tomorrow. |

My daughter is pretty much into whatever her mother or I play for her, just mostly stuff we like that's on the 'light' end of the spectrum; I don't think she's ready for The Residents just yet. Sometimes I put on something kick-ass like some live Neil Young and say, "That's Rock and Roll, baby" and she'll say, "yeah, rock n roll daddy" and smile and dance around. TMBG is a great band for kids and adults, like a great movie that kids and adults can like, like Ghostbusters. With her being just over 2 1/2, she's starting to sing ABC and LOTS of Christmas songs and likes the songs in Disney movies. She's already has a better ear than me, and she loves to play music as much as listen to it. She gets a kick out of hearing herself through a mic, and dies laughing when I run it through a delay pedal.

For kid-specific: Dan Zanes is good, TMBG (always seemed like a kid's band anyway). I can tolerate the Wiggles but some people can't. Laurie Berkner sucks. Doodlebops REALLY suck. Luckily my kid hates them. She does like some Dora sing-along tie in albums though
My kid likes other, non-kid music a lot though. Sometimes we'll be playing a cd in the car and she'll ask to hear songs again. All kinds of crazy, inappropriate stuff, which she sings along to and makes devil horn fingers even if it's not metal. I got her a little baby drum kit and accordion and harmonica and recorder and acoustic guitar. |

My 2 and 4 year old girls like music in general, but they really like musicals like Peter Pan (the stage production), Sound of Music, Willie Wonka, Mary Poppins, etc, as well as Tchaikovsky's ballets, Rage Against Martin Sheen (which will have to be cut out as soon as the older one picks up on all the cuss words), Joan Jett, They Might Be Giants, The Ramones, The Real McKenzies, Angelique Kidjo, Harry Conick Jr., Laurie Berkner (guess you won't be coming over any time soon, Levi), as well as individual songs like House of Bamboo, Chubby Checker's Limbo song, Cow Patty by Jim Stafford, songs from School House Rock and Electric Company, a whole repetoire of rock (Including Blood Pollution by Steel Dragon), and any Capoeira music (example for the masses: Zum Zum Zum used in the Mazda commercials).
They're pretty well rounded kids - well, at least musically. Fortunately they're not really keen on rap or pop or Hannah Montana or any other Disney pre-teen money grabbing garbage. "Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read" -- Zappa |

I can believe how many of you play-music-for-free people are reproducing. Don't you know the world is facing a population crisis? What do you think is so special about YOU that you need to spread your genes around? That's truly despicable. Wake up!

Dude, I don't like your jerk-off face, I don't like your jerk-off posts, I don't like your jerk-off attitude, and I don't like you, jerk-off. "spread[ing] your genes around" as "despicable" is offensive to me on a personal level. Anyone can talk shit about my music, my writing here or elsewhere, about what I look like or my lifestyle, but you start talking shit about someone's decision to have children then you've proven you're a complete asshole. I'm not an angry person, and I do not act out in any physically aggressive way, but you have earned my complete contempt. I know you like to post offensive things, to get people going, but you are doing NOTHING. You really aren't THAT offensive, you're just a little bitch. May your seeds lie fallow, may your loneliness create a personal hell for you, and may all you effort for the rest of your days be for naught. While you remain a talentless, thoughtless, idea-less troll, the rest of us shall create music and art and enjoy life in a way you will never know. |

Ha! I love it! Every time I start to think, "Damn, I should leave these poor people alone and quit having fun at their expense," something hilarious like this post comes along. I'm constantly amazed at the power of mere words. First of all, when have you seen my jerk-off face? How did you know I could jerk off with it? It's true, I don't ever intend to bring children into this dog-awful world. But aside from my contempt for humanity and reproduction, overpopulation is indeed a serious issue. Call me a do-nothing, talentless troll all you like, but I am in fact in the process of writing a science fiction story about a future in which overpopulation has reached crisis proportions in which there is not enough food around to feed half the human race. This is a reality almost certainly in the cards for the human race. I envision a dark future in which only the elite, the super-smart, super-talented, super-rich or genetically pure are allowed to have children. Everyone else (people like you) must undergo sterilization. And that makes perfect sense to me. Lowlife ghetto idiots who fuck cuz it feels good and pop out babies, career criminals, kids having kids, all this scum only serves to keep down the human race and burdon its progress. The future will belong to the chosen few. Everyone else must perish for the sake of humanity. |
