After years and years, Ya Ya Boom finally sold out of its first two discs. We sold out of the first 100 copies we made of our May release. I've got 500 more coming, and I don't want them to end up underneath unused household bullshit in our closets. Aside from playing lots of shows, how do you get rid of your discs? Any secrets of the Internets I should be aware of? We've got the cdbaby thing going.

We were having problems moving them for awhile, but a combination of cross-marketing them as drink coasters and giving them away for free has taken care of that problem.
We totally have 900 in our closet. And you know what? Someone probably has 900 Fatso (or insert awesome bygone Albuquerque band here) CDs in their closet. Someone needs to organize a local record swap.
A swap would be great! I know there are a bunch of local bands whose cds I don't own for whatever reason.
The big times we sell cds are on tour and when we have our initial album releases. Outside of that sales are typically fairly slow and there's no rhyme or reason to any of it.
Here's another question - did anybody have discmakers make their album in the old days then notice that discmakers had put their fucking logo on it? I've heard they stopped doing that, but boy did that suck. Nothing screams 'vanity press' like the old discmakers logo.

That is totally gay and I would've send that shit back if they did that to ours. Logos are dumb. Diskmakers has no right to slap an ad on your art.
I wanted to mention on other thing here that I noticed when we were just on tour... After you are done with you show and people are looking at your merch (if they are not buying it) offer them a CD and say "here, take it, it's yours!!!" Nine times out of ten people WILL take it and will feel obligated to pay you for it as well, even if its not the full price... anything counts when you're on tour and those CDs don't do any good under your bed in Albuquerque. We gave tons of CDs away after shows and we got a lot of cash and even some beers, shots and other assorted party supplies out of it.

I'm going to try this and let you all know how it turns out. Actually its kind of a no brainer. Hastings will do consignment at any location so our CD will be available at any hastings around Albuquerque and possibly the state. We are going to promote our album sales at those stores with hand bills and through myspace also on our handbills will be the number for the edge saying if you want to hear the music call and request a song and their logo. My thinking is that it will be free promotion for hastings and the edge and we get our music heard and albums sold. Good for everyone except for the mall employees who will get to look at my mug everyday.
Also Gio mentioned that a local music kiosk at the mall would be cool. I think that would be a good idea if someone wants to start a business. Wouldn't even take very much legwork or promotion money to get going cause the bands will promote it for you. There would just be a lot of red tape for all the consignment deals.

We've been having great success selling our CD's at Borders. With mixed success elsewhere...
We've sold a little over 400 CD's out of the 500 we bought and are giving out the remaining. Our focus now is on our new album so the older music is free.
We're down to the last 30-something copies of Outside The Van Door. We sold most of those on tour. I think some of them ended up at local shops and I just forgot to pick up the money. We've still got boxes of our EP in stock.
But yeah! The kiosk thing would be rad. I thought of it in the shower of all places. And not just sell CDs but other merch like t-shirts, stickers, patches, etc. It might be a way to get local music to the "average" person.
Has anyone checked out Charlie's local section lately? There's some older stuff in there gathering a little dust. Seems like at one point Charlie's was even taking demos to sell. If I weren't so broke I would have bought like 4 CDs out of that. I like the idea of a band record swap. Throw in some barbecue and it sounds like a good time.
We've had great success giving them away after shows. If someone cares enough to ask about the album, I will usually give them a copy out of Thunda's personal stash. At this point (more than a year after the release) I am just as happy knowing someone will listen to our album as making a few dollars off of it.

I'll give it a try. July 13, head downtown and bring the music you want to offload onto others... I think that for this to really be succesful, bartering is the way to go, but if you're a band that wants to sell your music at the Swap, that's cool too, but it will cost you $5 to do so, just like the flea market.
Hit us up with any questions... We had our front man quite on us 2 weeks after pressing up 1K discs... I will be giving these away for free. Bring yer music down and let's swap.
I still have about 500 Liquid Gypsy DVD's in my closet at home, but if anyone is interested in selling CD's, shirts, or other merch they can bring it to the Studio and we would be more than happy to advertise your mearch for sale at Bleeding Eardrum.
