Te occidere possunt sed te edere non possunt nefas est.![]() |
Every time I hear a lyrical line end with the word "heart," I can't get the thought out of my head that the corresponding rhyming word at the end of the next line should be the word "fart." This destroys me. It's like some weird compulsion to have a lyric worked out that ends in "fart" before the next line is even sung. Thoughts?

many years ago I was part of a panel judging poems that had been submitted to my college literary magazine. I'll never forget starting to read one student's submission aloud: "Let me tell you of the Faerie Queen that lives inside my heart; she's wise, and sweet, and wonderful..."
At that moment, the professor/advisor in charge broke in with, "...and has a smelly fart." That was the end of that session because we all laughed until we were hoarse and our eyes were watering. Semi-off-topic, but fuggit. \m/DooM\m/ |

Damn. Now you have put that into my head and all songs with heart will be ruined for all time. THANKS A LOT.

Aw, cheer up, Levi! Word is these wife swapping politicos want applications to apply to your Swingers Club.
It all evens up in the end. (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

Ha! We don't swap though- in other couples there is always an ugly one, and we'd both rather trade up. Better to fly solo! |

Actually, that one I can totally get. Need I remind you of a little classic schoolyard line, "I smell a fart, and you're to blame, you give underwear a bad stain?" |

The way to get around this is to put heart at the ending of the second line of the couplet, not the first. Problem solved. Or just write better lyrics.

I always cringe when I hear "heart" at the end of a line. How many other cliché lines can you expect next?
"Heart" and "Apart" usually "tear me apart" "Heart" and "Start" - "you broke my heart now my life won't start" "Heart" and "part" -- "she broke my heart now I know I must part" Unfortunately I never hear lines like "You broke my heart now I'm gonna shove a fucking pencil in your neck." |

Clichéd lines exist for a reason though. People have hearts, and they will love and get them broken, always have, always will. It's universally relatable. It may be trite, but it's true, and there is often more power in truth than there is in being clever, especially long-term.

You're right. Probably the most universally relatable topic in one way or another... I guess some of those lines that make me cringe most have more to do with the style of music and not the content. Justin Timberlake, Coldplay, etc. There have been some pretty righteous ballads over the years. |

Ever heard of Harry Nilsson?
Check out the lyrics to his song, You're Breaking My Heart. It doesn't rhyme heart with fart, but it does say "fuck you". (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |
