OK, so we had a topic for bass, what about drums? Who are good local drummers? I think Nolean from WMD and Romeo is good. Even though I've only seen him twice, I was impressed with his playing-very solid time keeping and a good sense of dynamics. Joey from the Novels is good too for his showmanship and playing. Who else?

yes, Noelan is great. he makes our band. People listen to Black Whole and think we used a drum machine.

I think Unit 7 Drain's Chris Newman is the fucking shit. I've seen him do things that i thought were superhuman. They don't use him nearly as much as the could, but what he does works great for those songs.

It's different with drummers than bass or guitar though. a bad drummer is way less likely to make it to a stage, and a good one is likely to be in two bands in this town. I can't think of a bad one off the top of my head actually.

Agreed Levi. It would be easier to point out shitty ones rather than good ones because they're all really good. Mindy Set Jill keeps time like a damn metronome! Gabe from Your name in lights/Left unsaid/jet black summer is the king of technicalities. Hell..I could name every drummer in town. They're all awesome.

there are very few meat headed, club fisted drummers angering the rhythm gods in this town. thankfully, they don't seem to last long.

take me for instance...i may have been one of the last truly terrible drummers. thank goodness the band got rid of me, changed their name and became sucessful.

There is a lot of good drummers but the one that sticks out to me is that dude from that short-lived band called "Old Man" He has a unique style. (i can't remember his name, but i'm sure he's in other bands)

He has an awesome, loose, groovin "Mitch Mitchell" kinda jazz style that really kicks ass.

I think that Noelan is the best. And I put Joey in his league as well. The best thing about both of them is that they just get better every time I see them. (And Joey always ALWAYS has a new stick twirl.)

I admire Maury's skill a lot, as well. Consider myself damn lucky to have played with him.

noelan's rolls & fills knock me out

eben (ex fukrot, just moved to portland) is a tireless hardcore machine. at the fukrot/eben farwell show he drummed with three bands on that same bill and was flawless with each.

trey miles (left albq long ago, ex-treadmill, ex-jacobins) had the most amazing control. all that ever moved was the man's arms, barely a shoulder and never the rest of his body. stunning.

ryan ruehl can't be beat for cool with that cig hangin' out his mouth allatime an' that james dean attitude. that boy's gonna make a hell of a lawyer...

I forgot all about eben! He's hands down the best in town. Or was the best in town. now there's about 8 million of you fighting for the #1 spot. He puts all to shame though!

His name is Dwight Evans, and he is increadable. He also hates every one of you and thinks we all suck. Seriously.

Noelan, Chris Moffatt (drummer I play with) and Mateo are my local favs in terms of indie-whatever bands but there are many I have sat in with or seen that are of other genres in town that seriously kick ass.

Yeah Chris Newman is cool to watch and listen to as well. He seems like he is capable of some seriously cool shit - more than he typically displays anyways. I would be stoked to see U7D utilize his skill in a more diverse manner.

From a bassists POV, I really like jamming with Chris Moffatt and Noelan the most though. Noelan is REALLY fun to play with cause he has a very strong synchopated style that is great to just lock into and pound out the illest pocket grooves. Chris M is fun cause he is very diverse in his approach to drumming and utilizes many techniques, and is always pushing to switch up synchopation, time signatures etc. which really challenges myself as well as the band. Mateo is fun to jam with cause he is all over the freaking place - but in a good way. Im talking super high energy drumming that just inspires you to get crazy. Ironically, teh only time I jammed with Mateo was while playing guitar ... would love to jam out the bass sometime with him. Anyways, yeah those 3 guys are my favs.

Oh shit, Jake. That guy is freaking awesome. I got a chance to jam with him years ago at a benefit show for Chris When he got in that bad car accident. Yeha man that guy can play.

He's a REALLY tight player.

All I really know are these guys, and they are/were all really great drummers!

Keith Herrera (BigDamnCrazyWeight/the Drags)
Amy Linton/Matt McCormick (Henry's Dress)
Chris Partain (Cracks in the Sidewalk/Elephant)
Brendan Dougherty (Elephant/Swizzlesticks)
Jesse Sandoval (Flake/the Shins)
Laura (the Eyeliners)
Oakley (the Rondelles)
Abe (Word Salad)
and those crazy fuckers from Allucaneat + Angry Babies + Scared of Chaka...

I dont know everybody's name, but drummers from
Black Maria, Unit 7 Drain, Romeo Goes to Hell,
Mindy Set, The Foxx, Fivehundred, The Dirty Novels, and just about every band... thank god for drums!
