May I use my first amendment right for just a moment, here in cyber space?
I think its just plain....Silly, that they changed our karma to skulls! (ok I know silly isn't the most mach term) But come on, in the words of John Stossel, "Give Me A Break".
Why is Alibi trying to be politically correct on this one? I don't think the Creator(s) of Rock Squawk were intentionally trying to single out flat chested women, or even "big" chested women.
Did the general public lose its sense of humor?
I'll shut up if I am the only one that thinks its just plain silly? I mean whats next? not cursing on the rock squawk, cause it might offend someone? that someone being a wanna be rocker, but is a conservative, and wants to try and keep rock concerts from happening after 10:30pm.. I when i go out of town and check into a hotel, it never fails right there in the first drawer there's a Gideons bible! do I read the Gideons Bible? NO! Do I like the Gideons Bible? No! but I'm not about to change the entire Hotels policy just to suit my needs, and get the Gideons Bible outta my sight. I have nothing against the Gideons Bible, I just don't know why there's so many damn translations? Its Gods Words by the way, then man come along and says, "I think this is what God is trying to say"

I think it's bullshit if they were pressured into it, or felt like the HAD to change it.

But I like the skulls, and most of all I like change.

no way they are going to stop me from swearing though.
Shit.

Yes. Didn't happen overnight. I think the "PC" concept has evolved....civil rights, women's rights, ADA legislation, gay rights.....the list grows longer every day.

I tend to have an off the wall sense of humor (in the real world) and sometimes I'll say things without thinking first. I find the only time I'm really "safe" is when I poke fun at myself.

My own skin is pretty thick....would have to be to live with a musician. I really hate to see it when someone is genuinely hurt by another person's attitude though. Probably comes from the fact that my parents were very prejudiced against people of color....in those days, and that part of the country the Klan was not unknown. The valedictorian of my high school class happened to be a a very intelligent, outspoken black man....they burned a cross in his yard for the sin of getting the best grades and basing his graduation address on the "I Have a Dream" speech. So ever since, I've had this tendency to stand up for what I perceive as "man's inhumanity to man"...in whatever form it takes. I don't mind making a little extra effort, personally, to spare someone's feelings....particularly if they take the trouble to tell me about it. It's NOT always easy to do that, particularly if you're outnumbered and not sure of your reception.

How do you think that lady felt when she refused to go and sit in the back of the bus? God help me, I don't remember her name.

Silly? Maybe. I would never say my household is "PC"....

As for cursing, well, I went through a phase with it in my younger days....I think I did it more for 'shock value' than anything else. I choose to try and avoid it now because I find people react to me better that way.....but to each his own. Somebody else will have to fight that battle (if they feel the passion), but I doubt it will ever come. Definitely won't come from me.

I think cyberspace CAN be a place for people to exchange viewpoints.....nothing wrong with freedom of speech. Last I heard, calm, rational discussion was the BEST way for people to understand each other. But of course, people getting along with each other has nothing much to do with music. It's always easier to break up and form yet ANOTHER band. God only knows how many !!@^%#@!&^!% drummers have gone through my living room and how many more are yet to come. "Can't we all just get along??"

Mark, I don't think anybody intended to pick on women with the bra sizes either...it was just lighthearted fun with no harmful intent. Perspectives change though.

Levi, I don't see how the Alibi could be forced to do anything. Last I heard, we also had freedom of the press - haven't heard anything about internet regulation either except for parental controls.

I am really tired of this subject and I think some people have gotten unnecessarily hurt with it. A lot of harsh words and bad feelings. I like the skulls, I think they're great.

Hey Jim. Can you do that "end thread" thing.....if/when you feel like it of course?

Who are you "quoting" there? I wrote pressured. I think that's valid, even though I'll bet they prefer the skulls and I do as well. I just don't know that it would have come up at all without someone making a scene. Just goes to show you, one person can make a difference. A few threats and accusations and it's a ...victory, I guess? I don't know that it is something to be proud of, any more than bra sizes are something to defend. Everyone is fucking nuts in my opinion.

I think the Alibi is relatively pretty damn free press and non-pc. they swear in there. They make fun of things. They mention KISS a lot. They put more into the local music scene than the local slick music magazines do. I just don't see why it had to change this way. I'm glad though that they did just change it to whatever they wanted and didn't put it up for a vote. At least I feel like somebody is getting the finger, and that's really all that matters.

You know, everyone got all up in arms over this shit, but I actually liked it more than endless debates about "why this town sucks."

Amen (including, occasionally, myself).

And Amen. I like a good debate. I don't see any victory anywhere. Victory would be a "do over"...if Swingnut came back, if she had a fair chance to contribute, and if none of this nastiness had EVER happened. Maybe some of you took what she said out of context.....I honestly don't think she was trying to be rude, she was just speaking her mind and exercising HER freedom of speech. With some people, you have to take a little time to get to know them before you pounce down their throats....that's what you wanted her to do. Practice what you preach? Maybe I'm the only one who feels that way. And I don't like seeing folks so upset.

Now if people could actually get going on "how can I/we make this town better".....what might you all accomplish? I think the Alibi has been GREATLY supportive lately....it's a good start.

Sorry if the Amen isn't PC. Brother Jimbo just has me in stitches.

Howdy,howdy, howdy!
well I like Alibi, I read it every week, I mean actully read it, not just look at the "escort" services near the back of the Alibi..well I don't know where I was going with that, but I will say this I do infact like the skulls myself! I just found it quite odd, that someone says a little something about bra size, next day (seems like) they change it! So to anyone out there that is dead and reading this, and might be offended that the karma is now a skull, don't be! its all in good fun..
but wait I just thought of something, maybe the Alibi is owned by a secret society? maybe they belong to the "Skull & Bones"? ohh no they are taking over our local scene!
ehh maybe not, after I forgot its just good old Albuquerque that we live in, nothing exciting like that would ever happen here.

I used to line my bird's cage with the Alibi, until it became bi-curious.

I'm not very impressed with the Alibi, personally. They systematically fired all of their talent. Michael Henningsen, Gwyneth Doland and Jeff Drew. Those people made the Alibi. I do appreciate that Jessica has brought some new energy into the music section. I think Michael Henningsen had burned out on the local scene. I would, too, if I wrote about it for 10 years.
Although I do have to say what was up with printing a discussion by Alibi staff about the Rocksquawk showcase? That was just ridiculous.

I read the Alibi on my lunch hour....habit probably started out of boredom. That, and I think the old man is really out of touch with current music trends. Getting him out to a show now and then has REALLY been good for him....even when he doesn't like something it tends to feed his creative juices. He's STILL going on Ya Ya Boom.

I've really enjoyed the band interviews and there's been more "local" coverage. I think that "Flyer of the Week" thing is a godsend for you....cheap advertising if you take advantage of it. The Crawls are a great opportunity, and so is this board.

Henningsen was a good writer and sounded like he knew a lot about music....I don't, but I'm trying to learn. I would agree with the idea of burnout though - the tone of his stuff was getting very personal towards the end there. The current writers sound a lot more positive and open minded. Just my five cents.

I really do like it. Granted, those previous writers were good writers, they just didn't write about stuff that interested me as much.I'm clearly biased since my band has been mentioned over ten times as much than we ever had previously (not counting ads). But I also have been actually getting the cds they review. I LOVE "flyer on the wall." Love the band interviews (every one of them has made me laugh). The news and the fun fluffy shit (like odds & ends and the tv and movie stuff) are just as good.

It may be that narrowing their demographic will leave some people feeling marginalized and hurt the Alibi. i hope not.

Personally, I just wanted everyone to shut the fuck up already. It was a lively debate and all, but ultimately, the issue was/is a dead horse that kept getting bludgeoned with the same couple of points, ad infinitum. Ad nauseum! But hey--if you want to dig up that big, rotten carcas for more abuse, by all means go ahead. It's a free country! ... well sort of.

Hey everyone forgot about poor laura.. Now that girl is busy as hell throwin down and managing this site (with the help of webmonkey), writing resturant reviews, interviewing, AND writing about the Local Scene.

One thing I do miss that Gwyneth always used to place in ech issue is "The Dish". I mean don't get me wrong it comes out like every 3 alibi's now, but that was always the first section I read in the alibi.. i dunno why? guess i like catching up on the gossip of the local eatries...
