Did anyone read the QOTSA Lullabies to Paralyze review in the Alibi? Basically she said - as much as I try to like this band their disguised testosterone driven music is for dudes. Fuck that - just because she doesn't like it she decides it's for "dudes". I fuckin love QOTSA - everytime I hear them I want to get my ass to my bass and get better. I know QOTSA is not for everyone - and I know I'm not the most girly girl out there ... But I know lots of girls (true music fans, true musicians and even girly girls) who can appreciate Queens.
Say that it's testosterone driven, fine ... but to say it is for dudes lacks creativity and is just plain ignorant.

Wow - I guess this pissed me off cos it was like a month ago and I am still ranting about it!

Hey Antonia i feel ya,macho is the disturbed bullshit that they pass off as real metal or saliva or any other of those Frat metal loving assholes...i could go on for hours about this. But I happen to be a big QotSA fan,and ive always heard this kind of"were gonna rock out then were gonna drink some red wine and make sweet love"vibe,i dont see why it wouldnt be appealing towards the ladies..So i agree with you.and they are that good.

I'm a big fan of the QOTSA but two years age they came around to the sunshine and were so bad that my wife and i left... but to go along with the testosterone thingy my wife loves them and she is far from testosterone driven.

I agree - that sunshine show a couple years ago - was definitely a disappointment ... I remember turning to my friend and saying - they're a jam band now? So many times I've also experienced the reverse - I'd get won over by a live show buy the cd - listen to it and thought god damn it - shoulda bought the shirt instead.

Some bands can do the live - some can do the recorded and a few can even do both!

i have been to 9 qotsa shows and the one at the sunshine was probably the 3rd best one i seen, only being topped by their december L.A. concert and a show in vancouver, i understand taste is subjective, but if you thought that show was bunk, your probably a surface fan who only owns songs for the deaf. when i seen that show, i only owned songs for the deaf, and wasnt even too familiar with it. most of the songs they played were not off that album(it was a 2 hour set!)so rather than lose focus on what they were doing cuz of add, i payed attention and realized they are at least the best band out there right and there songs come from a organic place where they master the sublety of tone and song structure, so basically i disagree...

"Not for chicks" isn't the real problem here, IMO. QotSA's audience base has changed a lot throughout their career, the result being that many or even most of their early fans have deserted them, myself included.

QotSA used to be a much more fluid, organic project with a broader complement of playing and songwriting styles. S/T and "Rated R" were way out and far out (of the "accepted" musical genres/formats), in that order. I love both those albums to death.

Songs for the Deaf adopted a more homogeneous sound and direction, but I assumed this was mostly because it was a concept album. I dug it, but I wanted more depth - both tonal and compositional.

Unfortunately (in my opinion), "Lullabies to Paralyze" continues the movement of the band towards greater mass popularity combined with less of what made them QotSA in the first place: taking chances and being creative. If anything, MORE ladies should like this record - it's quite obvious to me that they are its intended audience - it's a makeout record, fer chrissakes!

Personally, I think it's time for Josh to call the band something else if it continues, but that, of course, is up to him. But without Oliveri and Lanegan, it just ain' the same band. And please don't get me started on Homme singing the Lanegan parts/tunes...

according to antonia
fluid + organic + live show = jam band

I love song structure ... actually I like structure in general - I'm just a nerd like that.

by the way - I'd probably be considered a surface fan of all the bands I like/love - but I have more QOTSA than deaf including some kyuss.

i was talking about the the show in 2003 with rye coalition opening. unfortunately, i blacked out during the first song of the qotsa set at this last show with EODM, so i cannot accurately assess that show!!fuckin vodka....mmmm vodka... fuckin vodka....mmmmm vodka...anyway i like the queens and believe they are THE best band around and it is totally my own opinion, and I really wanted to comment on how absurd that review really was, as it did not review ANYTHING!! i would not mind what she said if said during a normal conversation, as i can easily blow off stupidity, but when your being paid to review something that someone took the trouble to send you for review, at least give an example of what you mean, at the very least...
