I just remembered I was supposed to report back what I learned at this AMA Conference. Here's the deal...next year, if you're serious about music, you need to go. Take lots of press kits, and I mean like thirty. You will have many opportunities to give them to press--the Journal, Hyperactive, the Denver Post, KNME, and Zero Hour Squared were all representing. One of the things I learned most about were how to put together an effective press kit and how different people like different kinds of press kits. For example, venues just want a CD with contact info and a quick bio, maybe throw in a picture. On the other hand, radio want a standard jewel case with a label on the spine for shelving. I also learned about BMI and ASCAP, inter-band agreements and other contracts, and tax ID's.
This is all stuff you can learn on the web any other day, but instead you learn it all in one place. Plus, you put press kits in people's hands and at least spare yourself the postage. |

The other cool thing is you get to ask questions to industry people. All the panells opened up to Q&A. I lerned that record labels and A&R will look sales ratios as well as numbers sold. Like say you spent 100$ promoting a show and made $200 from door and $200 from merch. The business man will see that as a good profit margin and will be interested. If you track these kind of numbers over time and show some growth than that will grab their attention even further. This will be consdidered just as much as albums sold and possibly more when your trying to pitch your band to A&R.
Another cool thing about this is, the guy on the panels who answered my question was from omni entertainment and I had spoken to him earlier and gave him a press kit. I think my question sparked his interest and he has since contacted our manager. Hyperactive music conference and festival will have more panels like this. Take advantage of this. I think industry people like to meet the person, and not just get a press kit in the mail. Tool and Chief |
