I'm a little torn betwixt "Pretty Vacant"(Sex Pistols), and Neat Neat Neat(The Damned).

Oi! Oi! Just as some bands have completely screwed up the definition of "punk music" - so have the neo-nazis in defining what a "skinhead" is. The traditional skinheads that were formed in 1969 were NOTHING about racism or any other foul stereotypes we've come to believe today. To truly understand this youth movement, you must read "Spirit of '69". Most of the new kids who call themselves "skinheads" today will hate this book. |

It was Johnny and Joey Ramone who were adament that they were not punk. It was the club scene climate at the time on the East coast that prevented them from starting out in the more "traditional" Rock clubs. Places like C.B.G.B.'s, The Mudd Club and The Peppermint Lounge were open to "new" music (N.Y. Dolls. Television, etc.) that was quickly labeled Punk, and those were the venues the Ramones started in. Myself? Well I figured between the leather jackets, Chuck Taylors and three chord action, that the Ramones were Punk. Apparently they considered themselves more Pop than Punk. The Misfits musical structure was more akin to Rockabilly and/or Hard Rock/Metal (according to some purisits and former band members) and the costuming and schtick were more akin to Peter Gabriel era Genesis than what was becoming the standard Punk Rock uniform. When the Misfits first came out, their music reminded me of the Broadway Elks fronted by a Jim Morrison wannabe, and their schtick seemed like some S.C.A.ers trying to do a Kiss thing. I never "got" it. The only performance I enjoyed by Danzig was this one. We were playing in Window Rock, and Danzig was in Tuba City that day! (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

Truth be told: I never got the Misfits either.

Absolutely. And if you reference C.C. California's post about skinheads and such, you'll get my gist. The co-opting of any Underground or 'Youth' Movement by the mainstream, inevitably results in things like uniforms, that eventually spawn shit like Hot Topic, Pop Punk and the general degradation of the original concept and spirit of said movements. At least that's my short version of a very long winded answer. (consider yourself lucky...!) (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

Some good choices here, but I love the DKs so would go with them. While "Police Truck" is a great song, I think "Holiday In Cambodia" (12 inch version) is better, more political and more representative. MisFits? Type O? Those are joke bands, right? Campy goth, cheesy music that sucks . . . I don't get the appeal. Except for 13 years old that wear the patches and jackets because they can relate to being actual "misfits." |

Oh, man, Ditch Drool Tool Troll, you actually admitted on this forum you like NOFX. I would never, in the company of such highly refined punk aesthetic, admit I liked NOFX here, even if I did like them (but I'll not say here if I really do or do not). It's a bit like saying you like the Grateful Dead (which I will also not admit any association or lack thereof with that band); it's asking to be stepped on.
I've always liked D.O.A.'s "Fuck You", but nearly every thing Black Flag did kicks ass, IMHO. |

Ya, this thread sucks. We should have Black end it or change it to something less ambiguous, like hottest rockstar ever. |

Pop-Punk, Ska-Punk and the likes cannot be considered Punk. Despite these sort of bands ability to "get the juices flowing" in today's young Punk-y thrashers, too many non-Punk elements are in play. Horn sections, good timey lyrics, love songs, and easy appeal to girls are just a few characteristics of these quasi-Punk bands that deviate from the organic anger, angst, anti-authoritism and social commentary that was part of the blueprint laid out by Punks early pioneers.
Though the debates surrounding Punk will undoubtably rage forever---origins being European or U.S.? East Coast vs. West Coast vs. Heartland? And what about groundbreaking pioneer bands like the Damned (a personal fave) who could be accused of having lyrics that are too "fun"? Or despite the vitriol and social commentary in the Dead Kennedy's (another fave) lyrics, they could be accused of being hippies, or even worse, sell-outs to the mainstream (with the exception of Jello/Eric who was a Boulder Colorado trust fund hippie anyway) Or a group like Rudimentary Peni who were on the forefront of DIY lifestyle as well as a musical style that could be argued as a precurser to Grind Core and it's offshoots? But for the sake of a generalized end to this discussion, the one band that embodies so much of the spirit, commitment and rage that I think most of us assosiate with Punk, is summed up best by The Musk...
With a musical ethos and touring style harsher than Fugazi, a social viewpoint and commentary more down to earth than the DK's, and an organization that remained true to all the DIY stuff, anything from Black Flag's musical cannon will comfortably fit the subject of this discussion. End Of Thread! (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |
