Solace
Alabama Thunderpussy
Slow Horse
Core
Raven's Creed
Bongzilla
Weedeater
Minsk
Buried At Sea
El Buzzard
Kung Pao
rWAKE
KYUSS
Slo Burn
Mos Generator
Saint Vitus

Along with everything else mentioned. That should be a great start.

On the 30th check out the band Damnweevil playing with your local top notch stoner band Devil Riding Shotgun. Featuring the mind blowing guitar tone and heavy as a busload of Bill Clinton's ex girlfriends, riffs of rocksquawk's own RacerX.

Another great ABQ band that fits the bill is Black Maria.

I liked the first album that The S-word put out. But they're a real touchy subject with a lot of idiots who are shocked by the fact that a young band full of pretty looking dudes got more of a buzz going in the mainstream than the 978852344 "stoner" bands out there composed of overweight, middle aged, beard farmers. There are a handful of scenesters out there who can't seem to understand why that would happen.

I had the pleasure of seeing them play and hanging with them on their tour with Priestess and Early Man. That was about a week after MTV gave them a rub. They could have gave a fuck less about the MTV thing and were cool and humble as fuck. So don't let any of the above mentioned crowd sour you on them. They were pretty damn good live, too. Early Man blew them all away, though.

I consider most of the stuff posted on this thread to be Doom and/or Sludge, mostly because "Stoner" as a descriptive kinda falls short - is it music by stoners? For stoners? Better listened to stoned? Regardless, bands like Fu Manchu, Nebula, Sons of Otis and Monster Magnet should be mentioned.

There are too many kick ass underground bands to even think of right now, but these two must be mentioned...

Electric Wizard

Dead Meadow

Also, christian rockers Starchild deserve to me mentioned here.

And one of the most kick-ass underground bands we've encountered on tour Burn the Witness from OKC

Hell, SuperGiant is pretty close to the oldschool "Stoner Rock" sound, but when I used the term once (jokingly), Kyle just looked at me like I shot his mom and said, "We're NOT a stoner rock band."

So I've backed off on my use of that adjective in a musical sense.

Really?? that's funny (and kyle's a funny guy) ... i guess a lot of people look at "stonerrock" as a derogatory term.

I think our music goes nicely with being stoned... but then again most music does!

If I've offended anyone by the term "stoner metal" I apologize. Though it may seem like a broad category, I use it for lack of a better term. But you know what I mean...

-Sabbath-esque guitar riffs that crunch like a mofo

-Sonically understandable lyrics, yet not all heshed out like Dio or somethin'

-Fierce drums, that ain't too overwrought with quadruple kick pedals

-Thematically, songs that deal with (but are not limited to) Fast cars, the desert, other worldly creatures, whiskey, women and moonlight (SG)...

Incidentally, I would classify SuperGiant in this same category... although I think that their live performance and songs in general surpass any other "stoner metal" band I've heard. Perhaps that's why they don't like the title.

Five Minute Sin has been classified as "Southern Rock" on several occasions. Yeeehaaawww all yous puppy dodgin' goat lickers out there! Personally I'd classify us as "Powerslop" but I hate to limit ourselves to labels...

I think it's just some people see these types of labels as dismissive terms, something that instantly pigeonholes you in with bands that perhaps you don't identify with.

It's just history repeating itself. Like when punk first started, I bet bands being labeled as "punk" didn't like it cuz it lumps you in with all the other bands ... same thing with the "grunge" label as soon as your band is labeled grunge you are pigeonholed as nirvanaesque.

Southern Rock ... confederate flags and whiskey.

Indie rock ...

Amen. Well, hopefully someday everybody will just say "they sound like SuperGiant" (respectively).

Stoner is just another of those "code names" for metal, anyhow, much like Grunge. After Hair Metal gave the genre a black eye, they just called it something else.

Interestingly, like many US-spawned styles, the Japanese (Eternal Elysium, Boris) and Sweden (Early Dozer, Spiritual Beggars) took the whole thing to another level. But take JB from Spiritual Beggars - his next project, Grand Magus, was more Doom, and then grew in a Power Metal direction. SLEEP is one of the proto-Stoner bands, but Matt Pike's High on Fire is a totally different animal - "War Metal"?

Anyhoo,no offense intended here, either, just kind of a "post-Stonerrock" mindset. After all, some of that shit is 10 or 15 years old.
