if ABQ formed some "Supergroups" who would be the players. Obviously since there are so many fine musicians in this city, there would have to have different genres:

-Rock
-Indie
-Metal
-Reggae
-Misc
-Anything inbetween
-Fill in the blank

What characteristics would make a band "indie" vs. "rock?" Aren't a lot of "rock" bands on "indie" labels? Are you "indie" if you're a "rock" band that sounds completely atonal and annoying like Pavement? Just curious.

Oh, are you a Pavement fan? It's just an opinion. I can't stand them. But hey, they're one of the most highly revered indie bands ever, so what do I know? I'd really like to know what ya'll consider to be "indie" music. We did it with "punk," do it with indie.

(from urban dictionary)

INDIE

The term: Short for independent rock. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff.

History: grew out from 60s garage, 70s punk, and 80s post punk it started in the mid 80s as alternative/college radio music. Once nirvana hit big the alternative genre split: the popular side was just alternative(Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, No Doubt, etc.) and the other half that wasn't mainstream(by choice or not) became indie rock(Pavement, Sebadoh, Built To Spill, etc).

Some bands have signed to major labels but are still considered indie(Modest Mouse, etc.). Go figure.

Sound: In the beginning indie sounded like alternative(because it was) but it grew more experimental and weird. In Britain indie has more of a typical sound like Radiohead, Muse, etc. rather than a definition based on 'the scene.'

The scene: if you really think all indie kids do is try to be cooler than other people then... well.. you're mostly right. The main point is, don't take the scene and the whole hipster attitude seriously. No one does. And if you do, well, then I'm cooler than you.

more off-subject indie defs...

4. indie

independent music. The anti-"emo". (well, maybe like emo's second cousin twice-removed with more talent, skill, and IQ)

the state of being "indie":

1)being unable to talk to anyone about your music.

2)but knowing that, in the process, you're way cooler than the kids you try to talk to about it.

indie kid: The Shins(before garden state)? Muse? The Snake The Cross The Crown? Pedro the Lion?...anyone? Bueller? anyone?

5. indie

(n) an obscure form of rock which you only learn about from someone slightly more hip than yourself.

Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Rilo Kiley, etc.
by kidAndrew Jul 19, 2004 email it

6. indie

1. Music released on an independent label
2. Any music slightly left of mainstream
3. Not always about lost love, sometimes about Christmas in Zoos and other things often seen while smoking funny stuff

"Yeah, Im into Indie"
"You don't look it"
"Do I have to?"

7. Indie

According to the dictionary, 'indie' is an informal version of the word independent.

Although this definition is accurate, the word has come to mean more. For many, it has come to symbolize originality and forward-thinking, especially in music and design.

By this definition, indie is any business or designer that is not associated with a large company. Indie can also define the consumer who chooses to support small business, independent record labels and handmade items rather than shopping at big-box stores.

I can't wait to attend the upcoming fashion show- there will be some great indie designers there and I'm looking for something unique!

I mean, if you want to be hyper-reductive, then no term means anything really. I don't really buy someone trying to "out" Indie as a non-genre or pick it apart in the same way as punk though. If you don't listen to any indie bands, then sure, you can claim ignorance, but on a similar hand I take those type of comments as a backdoor attack on indie rock more than a clarification issue. And it's fine to hate it, I just think people should be more upfront and own that hate (I hate about 90% of indie rock, and feel kinda played out on most of the other 10- which isn't far off other genres). Unlike the "what is punk" question, indie has less emphasis on ethos and politics, a broader goal, less rigid cross-polination of style, blurrier boundaries to begin with, etc. If punk is a movement, Indie is less, but as a simple communication shorthand it's still less vague than punk or even metal.

"Indie" started as a blanket generalized term, a marketing term (anti marketing term?) more than a genre one, sure. And people obviously use it that way regarless of sound still- but that's semantics and disengenous because you know what both the literal meaning is and the connotation and are mixing them up unfairly. I think, unlike "punk" or "alternative," it's been evolving towards a more narrow definition, to be taken usually more reductive, similar to "new wave," which meant five million bands at first but narrowed as it shed "new romantic" "darkwave" "post punk" etc. I think unlike the big tent of punk, most of us have a idea of at least what "indie" is NOT, i.e. not those other things, and not grunge or emo (not "alternative" or "college" ? ). We all know that "new wave" does NOT mean Dead Kennedys anymore, right? we know what Indie means if we care to pay attention.

I think of Pixies, Sonic Youth, Archers of Loaf, Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided By Voices, Built to Spill, blah, blah... it IS a catch-all, misc-type category still, but again I think the common thing is that those bands (besides starting on minor labels) are not those other genres mentioned. It's less and less often used to lump things together and is more and more specific as bands move away from that "sound."

It's admittedly still nebulous, but c'mon. Like porn, I know it when I see it? Or am I full of shit?

intresting feedback. maybe we shouldn't classify the genre, and just put different players together?

Anyone ever hear that episode of This American Life where they picked at random 6 people from the music classifieds and put them in a band together? they had a soul singer and a theramin and a indie guitar guy and a reggae bass, a violin (I think). It was actually pretty cool.

My albuquerque supergroup...

Vocals - Captain America - I'll bet he's got a frontman in him somewhere

Lead Guitar - That dude that walks around downtown with the pocket amp.

Rhythm Guitar - Sloppy aka Tireless neck - Any band would rock harder with him in it.

Bass - Adam (500, Catfish Hunter) - We already know he can rock the drums and the guitar. I bet he could lay down some bass too.

Drums - That crazy dude that played one show with DVD. If he's unavailable my second choice is Mikey, owner of Bleeding Eardrum.

Tamborine - Don Schrader - just seeing him on stage would rock!

Keys - Noah Wolters (Into the Quick, Outhouse)- Noah makes any band sound better!!

I was on the patio at Mannies eatin' with the wife yesterday and he walked by. Playing. He had attached his amp to his pants. It was awesome.
