sure, you can use mine if you like, and feel free to change any spelling or grammar towards a more coherent english, but i should tell you that my review was off the cuff as i sat and listened to your album. if needed, i could condense my wit and wisdom to more quotable lines like: "U7D's powerful release loosened my medulla. Now I need an expensive surgery." "Lists provides all the reasons why socialism will work, but you'll have to send U7D $5 for their decoder ring to tell you how." "No local band in Albuquerque has released as much solid material and not moved to another city to become famous (as yet)." and so forth, so whatever works for you will be fine with me. |

Your Music Is In Odd Time Signatures![]() |

Unit 7 Drain: Making Albuquerque Sound Good CD: Unit 7 Drain, Lists (Socyermom Records, 2006) http://www.pitchperfectreviews.com/?p=196 I first met Harry Redus-Brown when he was dating my upstairs neighbor in a crappy apartment building on Harvard Street in Albuquerque, N.M. That was before he became a local music celebrity as Unit 7 Drain’s guitarist and lead vocalist. Before then, Redus-Brown’s life was particularly daunting. It turns out that he, Chris Newman (drums/piano) and Tony Wissing (lead guitar) met as teenage runaways, who over the years lived and supported each other and made music together. It wasn’t until 2000 that the guys really started to focus their attention on playing music and moved to the city, where they formed Unit 7 Drain. From day one the boys had pant-loads of ambition and year after year recorded new EPs and demos. They were known for sets that were brimming with energy and for putting some effort into their on-stage attire - no jeans and T-shirts for these guys. It was, and still is, a group that gives 110 percent 100 percent of the time. Unit 7 Drain’s latest disc, Lists, is definitely its most accomplished effort to date. The 12 tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered at Stepbridge Studios, produced by Tim Stroh and released on Albuquerque’s premier record label, Socyermom Records. The packaging for Lists is well done, it’s abstract, bright and personalized, with lists of all sorts (i.e. “Smashed: 50+ guitars, 10+ basses, 15+ keyboards, 5+ amps, 10+ drum sets, 1 Hammond, 20+ stomp boxes.”) on the inside J-card. The tunes are lively, new-wave/pop pieces, with a strong ’80s flavor well-written synth parts that add a great layer of electric sound (by Little Bobby, who joined the band in 2003). Ella Vader’s (bass, who joined up in 2005) vocals are sweet and innocent, and even though her and Harry’s are complete opposites when it comes to texture, they bounce off each other remarkably well. Though the band cites Robert Smith on its list of Best Guitar Players and included an entire list dedicated to The Best Cure Songs, 7 Drain doesn’t sound much like The Cure and isn’t nearly as depressed or needy as its predecessor, though 7 Drain doesn’t skirt painful images … but neither does it avoid hopeful and resilient ones. For all intensive purposes, Lists is radio-ready. Production-wise it’s years ahead of most of the stuff found on “local” recordings, and more than a few songs would fit perfectly in the mix on today’s alt.radio stations. “Almost Home” is the epitome of 7 Drain’s music. The catchy, susinct ’80s new-wave number offers a perfect harmony between Redus-Brown and Vader during the chorus and a toned- and slowed-down section toward the end where the band kind of regroups before lunging back into the melody. The opener, “Traitorous Heart” is another ready-for-radio number, one that has great sustained synth chords and nice cymbal work. The lyrics get lost behind the wall of guitars in some spots, but that hiccup can be forgiven since they’ve managed to write a thoroughly entertaining hook. Always entertaining, always ahead of the pack, Unit 7 Drain is sure to find fame beyond ‘Burque’s borders if it stays on its no-holds-barred course.
