Ok, no one seems to be reading this thread, so yes it's true, we're recording. We're donig it at my(Mike's) house. We really are using Cakewalk 9. My A/D-D/A converter's and pre's consist of two Aardvark Q10's. Right now, I'm using Alesis Monitor Ones (passive) powered by the sub section of a Roland PM-3, because the Alesis amp is broken right now. For Drums, we used a Shure SM-57 on the snare, I won't provide you with angles or distances unless you ask politely, fucker(not you Gio, Ella or any other female Squawkers[yeah right, girls don't like Simfonik Plague and hence wouldn't have abundant occasion to frequent the SP forum{sigh}]), the Audix F Series drum mic kit, with the low one on the floor tom, an Audix D6 on the kick, which sounds just great. We've got the F-Series little condensers far to the outsides and we've got the AKG C3000B right in the middle. We're largely running Lance direct, line level, right into the Q10. Lance's amp is a Roland VGA7 and sounds like the Apocalypse when played with his seven-string (Ibanez). He's using a heavily tweaked Triple-Rec-type patch. Lots of good clean sounds, too, but I'll get into that after it comes out. At this point we are completely done with guitar and drum tracks except for the weird little intro to Panic Scars which we've got to completely redo because my time sucks and I'm a pretty shitty drummer when it comes down to it. So, Aaron's got the SVT-4 Pro, and we're basically going to try every possible input jack combo available. I'll write more in a bit...(updated as of 9-3-07)We ended up running Aaron in through his DI out, no real compression, which we are regretting right now. We're also regretting the lack of compression on the snare on the way in. I've always compressed to "tape," and I wanted to try something different. And we're paying for it now. We ran vox in via an AKG C3000B, metal pop-filter, into a Roland MMP-2 on a tweaked 1073 setting, tiny compression (like 2.5 or 3:1) line level into the Aardvark. Most vox are stereo and panned hard except for harmonies/backing. For all you naysayers, NO, we didn't copy a track to another channel, Lance actually performed 2 takes which we split L/R. We're really almost finished with the mix. Panic Scars intro drums suck the big one, due to the lack of use of a click(which we didn't use because of time considerations[I mentioned this previously{the time sucking]}) but we've developed a solution. We've got a pair of Event Studio Precision 8's on loan and their sonic qualities have improved the mix exponentially. Everything is backed onto a .5TB hard drive, so no worries about us losing shit. I just posted a thread about the listening party, and I feel pretty good about the solidity of the time frame. To all you who have bitched at us about our punctuality relating to the recording, Big Grin. Don't worry, it's coming soon. In the meantime, come see us and you'll hear at least one song that was written post-tracking. Cheers, bitches(once again, not you, Gio, Ella, LauraSJockey, MarisaBoom, JTonic et al.)

Wow, that's a fine set of equipment you are using. I'm not sure about any professional techniques, and I know there's no one visiting my forum to discuss recording, so I'll describe here my home recording outfit.

First, I recently traded my digital 8 track (Zoom MRS-800 or something like that, for those interested in details) for a Tascam 4-track tape recording device. For me, nothing beats the sound of tape. Hiss?, I love it!... Difficulty to get it to another format?... I don't care! But, the most important thing for me in using tape (and yes, sentences shouldn't be started with a conjunction, but the structure was more for effect than to adhere to 'correctness'[for those of you keeping track of such things]) is the ability of tape to pick up the magnetic disturbances of spiritual and hyper-dimensional activity. It may be easy to believe that this sort of thing does not occur, but for those audiophiles with a good ear, and a sympathy for the unknown, the reward for listening carefully is quite valuable. Currently, I am of the opinion that most anything will do in terms of equipment, but the nicer the better. I am poor, however, so what happens to be around the house is what I use. I go from a Sure 58 into a Lexicon multi-effects unit (you know, the cheap one), then into various effects if I deem necessary (Digitech delay, Boss delay, Ibanez distortion, Big Muff, Line 6 [the blue one] and at times some of a compression pedal). I try to do most everything mic'ed, because direct in produces such a strange sound to me. Also, just to make sure I get a 'pure' sound, I light some incense and make gestures I assume were the same made by the worshipers of the sun gods in ancient Mayan cities, then I can hit the record button with confidence. I also enjoy watching songs come together in the recording process, and in fact they may only become songs as I add and subtract parts and sounds. I like to take my time with the recording process, because I notice themes begin to appear and I like to see the songs take on a bigger context than inherent in the song. Oh, and the gear... a late 50's Henry Miller piano, valiant guitar, unknown brand bass... shit, my equipment isn't even worth talking about. The most important piece of gear is my brain, and that's usually on fire and full of activity, which never makes up for the sounds or tones, but does provide endless opportunity to use my cheap equipment. Good luck to your recording and I hope to hear the new SP record soon. prost!
