Sigh... kind of a non-story about us in the Alibi, but we'll take what we can get...

Music to Your Ears
By Laura Marrich
Duuuuuuude-- Take a bong hit for our homies! Two Albuquerque bands have been invited to play in The Stoner Hands of Doom, the largest festival of stoner-rock in the Southwest. Devil Riding Shotgun and SuperGiant were selected to appear with more than 40 bands near Phoenix, Ariz., this Labor Day Weekend. Unfortunately, Devil Riding Shotgun won't be able to attend due to a work scheduling conflict. “It would have been great to go and represent Albuquerque. We'll just have to wait for the next opportunity and play around town, [which] is great to play in,” says DRS bassist Neb. “Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.” So now it’s down to SuperGiant, who’ll perform alongside the likes of Graves at Sea, Super Heavy Goat Ass, Acid King and Sasquatch. “A lot of bands have gotten discovered at this festival,” says Jeremy, Alibi webmonkey and nimble-fingered lead guitarist of SuperGiant. En route to the festival, SuperGiant will make a pit stop in Flagstaff on Friday, Sept. 1, where they'll knock the plaster off the Hotel Monte Vista. It's an unlikely venue, but the venerable old hotel is reputed to be haunted by 10 different ghosts. So that's kind of rocking. Learn more about the ghosts at www.hotelmontevista.com. Details about the festival can be obtained at the event's crappy website, www.cherylsweb.com/shod/index.html.

Good luck to SuperGiant at SHoD (if they make it outta that haunted hotel alive, that is...

MUAHAHAHA!!!!

DEVIL RIDING SHOTGUN PRESS RELEASE: 6/1/07

Albuquerque, New Mexico heavy rock trio Devil Riding Shotgun has completed a self-titled debut album and will be officially releasing it on June 22, 2007. DRS is Neb Fixico (bass/vocals), Alan Edmonds (guitar), and John Stroh (drums).

The DRS CD release party will be hosted by Burt’s Tiki Lounge and will also feature local heavies Black Maria, Left Brain, and SuperGiant. CDs will be available for purchase at the show for $5 each. After that, they will be available online and locally (details to follow).

The Devil Riding Shotgun album was self-financed and recorded locally at Sight 16 Studios in Albuquerque with Sid Garcia engineering. The eight songs span all of the band’s musical directions, from heavy riffing to flowing melodic passages, from moody introspection to raging catharsis. Fixico’s deeply personal lyrics add depth, humanity and emotional focus, making each song a window into a facet of the human condition.

DRS is proud to present this document to the listening public.

First review for the new album...

Devil Riding Shotgun – Self Titled
Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Self Released
Release date: June 2007

“A hell of a first impression” is how I described this Albuquerque, New Mexico trio when I gave their four song demo a spin last year. Good thing, as if it hadn't, I wouldn't have bothered with their self titled debut.

Simply put, any issues I had with their demo (mostly with the vocals) are gone on their full-length. Devil Riding Shotgun takes the heft of St. Vitus-style doom and adds a liberal dose of classic rock (Buffalo - the Australian band, not the South American one - springs to mind). The songs may have the usual grim trappings, but they still get up and boogie. “Here We Go” and “Just Thinking” are perfect examples of this; coincidentally, they're also the two highlights of the album.

This isn't to say it's perfect. “She” is a little too maudlin and weepy for my taste and comes off as a sort of overly sincere drunken ramble. But overall, this is a fine debut and recommended for those who are looking for classic doom and rock with some stellar playing.

Devil Riding Shotgun
By Marisa Demarco

A knicker-blasting good time

Devil Riding Shotgun is not out to make stoner rock or a specific branch of metal or anything-core. Instead, this three-piece replaces genre with enough stage energy to sustain a set alongside any knob-cranking monorocker in town. "I do like the feeling of standing in front of your amp and having your pants billow from the sound waves," says guitarist Alan Edmonds. "You know something's happening behind you."

Edmonds, singer/bassist Neb Fixico and skin-beater John Stroh aren't fresh-faced kids assured of their eventual fame in the rock music industry. "We're already old. We're just not an old band," says Edmonds. In their year and a half together, they've managed to avoid the pitfalls of their past projects and focus instead on that tempest in their trousers. "I've been in bands with people who've got bad attitudes, who are hooked on various substances, who wouldn't show up, who pawned their gear all the time," Edmonds says. "You begin to learn how hard it is to get a group of people together that are all moving in one direction." They put out one other recording, just something to use to book shows. Fixico calls their new self-titled release the band's "real disc." What you see is what you get on Devil Riding Shotgun . "This sounds like us live," Edmonds says. "We can pull everything off."

Edmonds credits a whirling Fixico for DRS's spry stage presence. Fixico came to Albuquerque from Oakland, Calif.'s punk scene. Rain or shine, in sickness and in health, Fixico doesn't miss a gig. "Sometimes we've sounded really crappy, but it doesn't matter," he says. "I did my best."

Edmonds remembers one band-history-making set with Fixico in a cast, his foot busted and pained. Although it was in his best interest to keep still, DRS is not a sit-down kind of band. "He was jumping up and down with a cast on his foot. I thought he was going to go right through the stage."

The guys in DRS are a little older, more settled, more responsible, Edmonds says. "When I first got into music, it was like, 'Aaaargh! This is great. I can have drugs and girls coming up to me after the show.' That's not what it's about. It's about making music, and I always loved the music, but it was sort of just the excuse."

Neb interrupts: "I still want girls."

"You can have ’em now. I'm married. John's married."

"I still don't get ’em. We need a second guitar player who looks damn good."

So much for the little three-piece that could.

Fuck, I remember that show.. We were there and Neb was going god damn crazy jumping on one leg. I was amazed that he didn't yell out "Go Screw Your Mothers!" and fly off the stage.

The Peacedogman.com review...

DEVIL RIDING SHOTGUN - "Devil Riding Shotgun", 2007 (Self-release)
They're like this with the devil.

A fairly commendable debut release from Albuquerque trio DEVIL RIDING SHOTGUN as they unleash their self released, self financed and self titled follow-up to a 4 song demo published in January 2006.

For the most part a mix of bass heavy, doom influenced grind, deep and moody vocals and heavy rhthym it's made interesting by some stirring lead guitar straight out of the book of classic rock.

"She" and "Dream" offer differing levels of misery mid album, "Walk" shows as a decent cut thanks to that impressive guitar and "Love To Hate You" takes a catchy opening lick, supercedes it with a chugging rythym and adds a suitably morose lyric to produce a decent track second in.

Far and away the most accomplished number to these ears though is the excellent, six minute plus "Here We Go". Another memorable lead guitar performance, with a lick that's almost boogie rock on a go-slow, it has a chorus that even hints at getting anthemic. In fact it's almost a shame here that they remember the downtuned, downbeat theme of the album and reign it in!

At the end of the day it's a decent, heavy stoner-rock disc that despite possessing little of huge originality or groundbreaking promise is actually thirty minutes well spent.

I'll take those as compliments. Especially compared to these hilarious tidbits from the Metal Observer review of our 4 song demo::

I seriously dislike the song “So Perfect”—I can’t even get a minute through without wanting to smash my CD player. “So Perfect” is perhaps the longest 3:24 known to man—it slows time so much I found myself completing tasks before I’d even thought of them. But at what cost?

the audio equivalent of lengthy dental surgery.

Really, if you avoid “Devil Riding Shotgun,” you’ll be much happier for it.

To be fair, Sid, the terms "excellent," "catchy," "memorable," and "30 minutes well spent" are in the mix, as well. We'll take it.

Personally I think the bass player sucks. Why can't he just play standard non-distorted bass lines? I just can't wait for the next episode of Who Wants To Be A "Rock Star".

FROM THE METAL OBSERVER:

Devil Riding Shotgun - s/t - 70%
Written by ravenhearted on September 27th, 2007

The name DEVIL RIDING SHOTGUN, and the fact that this Stoner trio hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico, made me expect this to be sweaty, grooving desert rock in the veins of KYUSS. With only a demo released beforehand, and no blood-sucking record labels attached, this Stoner band's debut album is a self-financed release, cleverly cutting out the middle man through online distribution.

"Devil Riding Shotgun" opens with a track ironically titled "Silence". The room-temperature seems to rise as the HIGH ON FIRE-esque song kicks into its first riffs, and after a few minutes I'm reassured that my assumptions weren't far off the mark. These guys know their Stoner Rock, as made evident by the heavy bass and cool-as-ice vocals (Wino comes to mind). After another exercise in tasty riffing, called "Love To Hate You", the album takes an unexpected turn and shows a different side of itself. "Here We Go" sounds like it could have been recorded by ALICE IN CHAINS in their prime, and definitely draws influence from various Seattle bands. This is by no means a bad thing, though, as "Here We Go" is one of the best tracks on the album.

Another Grunge-y song follows, and then the band relight their joints and turns their amps back up to 11. The rest of the album is pure Doom-goodness, and you can even hear some SAINT VITUS shimmering through at times, only with less gloom and more energy. The band rages on, and when they reach the final track, "Why", the music climaxes into a great Stoner anthem, which could just as well have come from the aforementioned HIGH ON FIRE.

Even though DEVIL RIDING SHOTGUN have managed to come up with some bitchin' tunes, there is obviously still room for improvement. They pay tribute to a genre that has a bad habit of stagnation, and this album simply isn't bringing anything new to the table. With that being said, it's a good first effort and well worth your hard-earned cash if you like any of the bands I've referenced above, or if you're simply a fan of catchy tunes.

From NoLifeTilMetal (thx to Scott from Ultimatum!)...

Devil Riding Shotgun (independent) 2007

1. "Silence" (4:10)
2. "Love to Hate You" (2:40)
3. "Here We Go" (6:29)
4. "Just Thinking" (3:30)
5. "She" (3:11)
6. "Dream" (3:12)
7. "Walk" (2:50)
8. "Why" (4:48)

I was playing a show at a new club in Albuquerque with Ultimatum in July 2007. The opening band (Devil Riding Shotgun) was great, old school dooooom metal similar to Place of Skulls, The Obsessed and Pentagram. Their sound was dirty, nasty and heavy. Lots of distortion on the bass and a ton of groove. Of course the guitarist used a Gibson SG. What else would you expect? Unfortunately there were not very many people there to see this band, but regardless, I was impressed enough to pick up their CD. Their CD is well produced, and may even be too clean for this band. They had lots of feedback and reverb live that is missing from the recording. I would imagine capturing this band's sound is quite difficult in a studio. However, that's not to say that this CD isn't good. In fact, I've listened to it several times over since picking it up at that show and quit enjoy it. The band write slow to mid-paced grooves. With the cleaner production, their studio sound falls somewhere between doom and stoner rock. The CD itself is professionally pressed but are encased in one of those slimline cases with only a single page insert for a cover. While their CD sounds very professional, the overall look of the disc is that of a demo. Regardless, the music contained is quite good and should appeal to fans of doom and stoner rock. "She" is not a Kiss cover, although that would have been cool to hear. Check 'em out:
