Holy Fuck!!
Despite their lack of regular live performances of late, Black Maria once again proved their power! Regardless of whatever recent poll results may indicate, Black Maria remains the top rock band in this town Scenester, Icky and the Yuks and a touring band, the Revenge all put on good sets. They were all fun, although with so many bands, things should have started earlier. But the night, like so many others, belonged to Black Maria. I have only two questions for Black Maria; 1-When is the next show? 2-When the hell are you going to put that album out? Even if you weren’t a Black Maria fan (hard to imagine) it was a GREAT night for fun and music. Like I said, Holy Fuck!! The party defiantly ROCKED! And you know, it’s all about the Rock!!! |

Wow! That was a pretty one sided review of the night. When it comes to being a tight band Icky and the Yuks is on another level than Black Maria in my personal opinion, and about 1000 times more energetic. Icky brings it no matter what the state of mind. Black Maria can bring it, when they are sober enough to stand up and hold their instruments

Agreed. This dude was utter perfection, the very embodiment of the The Mustache Spirit. "Had I'd know it'd end this way, I wish, I wish, I wish I'd brought those chains." -- 5MS |

One sided? Look at the thread title. I wasn't reviewing the whole gig. Where you at this show? Hoards of jocks? Frat party vibe? This gig was sponsered in part bt Sector 9 Skate Boards. There was a international outlaw skate competition that weekend, hence the more athletic group of guys there. Are you sure you were at the same gig? |

I was there for a few minutes, although I was already starting to feel the beginning stages of this fucking flu that I've been down and out with for the past 5 fucking daze!!! I was bummed to miss Black Maria... I haven't seen them in what seems like forever (other than the led zepplica show) Atomic was seriously fucking packed that night though for sure.

None of these 3 bands sound anything like each other. As far as comparing energy levels, I'd have to say The Revenge (from Phoenix) had the most. They were ALL OVER that stage and in our faces. Second was Black Maria, most definitely. These guys are masters of their genre. On this particular night, they not only blew ears and decibel counters, they blew minds (just look at the crowd's faces) and equally covered a lot of ground on that stage! Not once did the crowd ever dwindle while they were up (again, proof is in the pics.) Always amazing, forever my heroes, Black Maria never fails to impress. And lastly, Icky and The Yuks did put out a great set. It was testosterone-filled and clearly catered to all the dudes in the audience who looked like they hadn't been let out of their cages in weeks. Hands down, Jay was my favorite to watch (such focus and intensity). The guy is awesome. And I didn't think Icky was as snotty as usual. Was this the new and improved IckyLite (half the bitterness of IckyClassic and doesn't upset your stomach)? Charitable event or not, Icky and everyone else I saw was in great spirits that night. It was a blast.
The Revenge: Black Maria: Icky and The Yuks: the line outside: people shots: Mr. Black Maria (who never fails to miss a show!): Pics from that show are now here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wigwambam/collections/72157604737432965/ Video of Black Maria is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIZV3OS7BCk hope nobody's got dial-up. |
