Melvins rule supreme. Tonight was about my 20th time seeing them and they still melt my face like the first time I ever saw them. They were the band that showed me that punk rock doesn't have to be fast. The Melvins lived up to my inner-hype and delivered again.
Dale and Coady are a four-armed beast of death. They were like a drum line birthed in the womb of Vishnu, only instead of world-destroying powers, they had drumsticks. It wasn't so much HUGE as it was more like one drummer with eight limbs. I was blown away by how great they play together and off of each other. Buzz was great as always.
Great rendition of the national anthem, too, overflowing with snare crush rolls, and kind of emotional. I know I cried.
The sound was fantastic and loud (ear plugs, thank you). And yeah, the poster guy was awesome.
My only complaint has nothing to do with the the bands. I was guest-listed for this show through one of the magazines I contribute to. Double checked it with the Melvins tour manager on Sunday, but I wasn't on the LP's list. Again. This is the fourth show I've been listed to cover at the LP and the third where that listing has failed. I didn't have $16 for the show and when I first went to try to get in the door guy explained that the Melvins hadn't turned in their list yet. Fine. I went down the street and had a beer. When I came back I still couldn't get in and had to borrow some cash from friends. I missed Porn. I missed most of Big Business. That sucked. Of all the shows I've covered, I have never had as many guest list issues as I have had with the LP. I love the place and most of the employees, and I like to think I'm supporting the ABQ scene by doing write-ups on ABQ venues for national coverage. Also, I don't need the shitty attitude when I ask about the guest list. I'm not trying to be a hot shot. I'm trying to do my job.
Sorry for the complaining. Had to get that of my chest. MELVINS!
