a loss is only something you never had

so for the umpteenth time a band has no call/showed for their gig at atomic .

. . . granted it is often an issue of miscommunication that leads to a cancellation, but more often it is a touring band that doesn't bother to let the venue know they are not coming .

it amazes me that these are bands that are supposedly supposedly taking their music seriously, but they act like children when it comes to treating the clubs they NEED like one night stands .

remember that no matter if you intend to not see someone again, you often end up doing just that.

all grumbling aside ...

there are some great folk that save our determined patrons from an evening of never-ending rugs n noses and hotormead jukeboxing .

into the quick , U7D , and a few touring acts have stepped in to fill the air with rock and/or good will .

sunday SPUTNIK MONROE played two sets of analog syntherrific musik .

these guys were really cool about a shitty sunday night, maybe even come back through on the 21st if schedule allows .

be der

I actually like Sputnik Monroe, I didnt know they finally made it out here. I booked them a while back but their tour leg passing through here had to be cancelled.

remember that it's also the resonsibility of the venue's booking person to confirm that the bands are coming through as planned. all it takes is a quick look at their myspace/website to see if the venue is listed on their schedule.

How exactly do you bale a bitch's ass, anyway? Same as with hay?

How sweet of you to dedicate a "wish you were there" to a band that didn't show. All rock fans should have such good manners!

Booking guys have better things to do than make sure bands aren't going to flake out. In a given week a venue can have up to 40 bands coming in. Check 40 websites a week to make sure a band is doing their job? It doesn't work that way and it shouldn't.

If you booked a gig, you're expected to show up or call in advance if you can't. The venue isn't there to serve you. It's a symbiotic relationship: you do your job and the venue does theirs.

And don't forget that "booking guys" network and talk amongst themselves. Bands that "bitch ass bail" will quickly find themselves on a shit-list, and practically un-bookable.

Communication is key.
Don't be a dumb shit.

speaking of respect and booking folk . . .
saturday i was a dick for convincing into the quick to come play atomic at 11 when they were set to play burt's at 12:30...
they did both sets on time, so there was no immediate conflict apparent to my short sight.

i was more concerned with getting a band to fill time (and well) than considering the disrespect to the establishment that had their set scheduled .

so, in the interest of disclosure i offer my head for whatever pike on which they hang the heads of assholes

and say "i was, and often continue to be a dick , mostly without noticing..."
by moving quickly with little to no thought of how it placed the cantina and the band in a bad light, i jeopardised the relationships of both bars and also, into the quick .

what band wouldn't want to play two sets on one saturday ?

the important thing is that our bands and venues need to do what we can to support the -ahem
"scene"
when things get nasty no one will be the better for it .

i regret this episode and i take full responsibility for it .

Things like this sadden me. Let's just all dick on the venues who would probably make more money if they got rid of the stage and started playing hip-hop. This is smart.

easy there nu-metal hesher guy. i was pointing out that stue trory's sarcasm was unnecessary. i don't see where my pointing that out is construed as "dick(ing) on the venues". i support all forms of live music and yes, d.j.s are just as legitimate as artists as you and your digata, digata, hyper guitar, more than four string bass, ultra kinetic drumming sounds of your Simfonik Plague combo. who by the way i am one of the four or five non connected to your crew people who enjoy your band.

No need to be insulting. Just pointing out that maybe it isn't really the Atomic. And thanks for being one of the 4 or 5! With our crew, it brings our total fans to like 9!

Check yer screen name. It's why I construed it the way I did. Thanks for the clarification.

well geez, it's not like i was insulting you. yes, that was a sarcastic way to address you, but it was also a dig to myself, as i am a big fan of your band and that style of music in general. sorry if i sounded like jonathan drake lieber lagoon (ha! where's my prize?) at the risk of seeming like i am back pedaling (i'm actually trying for some humor) my screen name could mean, "f**k that o mic", as in overhead mic. but yeah, i was being mean about the atomic cantina's rep and his sarcastic use of the term scene. i mean without people like me, music or not, his "scene" would be unemployment. know what i mean?

No worries, and I was being mildly sarcastic myself about being insulted. Cheers, mate.

i used the -ahem and quotes to set the WORD scene apart from the rest of my statement .

i have never cared for the word or implication of that term, and i guess it is my indie upbringing that lends me toward my distaste at its use.
it was my inability to come up with a better word that warranted its inclusion in my statement .

i think it is grand that overall, this garnered more response than the real point of my 2nd post here.

for you to home in on that one thing and take offense just confirms my suspicion that people come here to bicker .

where in the rest of my apology do you read contempt for this town and its rock venues ?

as for my employment, i am grateful that i can get paid to do one of my favorite things, which is see lots of bands .

i do take issue with the statement that djs are as valid as musicians... if they are spinning vinyl recorded by someone other than themselves, they are disc jockeys... which is why they call them djs .
make YOUR OWN RECORDS and you are something else.

i am not saying it does not require some skill to set bpms and wear headphones on one ear,
i am saying it does not de facto make them a musician or an equivalent thereof .

so, rant and take offense to THAT .
