Representing for the burgeoning Albuquerque Hard Rock Mafia/Stoner Rock Cartel, Devil Riding Shotgun and SuperGiant turned opening for touring band Pearl’s and Brass, into an example of not only how hard they rock, but how quickly both bands are progressing in a forward direction. And did I say how hard they rocked?
Devil Riding Shotgun started the evening in fine form. DRS lay down a hard, rocking and often dissonant rhythm and signature sound that seems firmly anchored in Metal. Effortless guitar explorations up and down the neck are subtlety enhanced by Alan’s thoughtful use of effects…..wah and various distortion and overdrive add to the dynamics of each song. Unexpected forays into boogie and back to the original, serious musical theme, laid out once again by the rhythm section of Neb and John. Both who are absolutely pros at holding the tempo and dynamic changes right on course. And putting in double duty, Neb is the singer as well as the bass player. Swept off in the rhythmic world he and the other two create, he is a mixture of energy and precision. Devil Riding Shotgun’s delivery tonight was more relaxed than other times I’ve seen them, yet unmistakably serious. With the often thankless task of opening a show, DRS played it hard and tight. A musical force who have established their presence here. Go check these cats out.
Local media darlings and straight up righteous Vatos, SuperGiant took the stage and in doing so, owned the night. Their self proclaimed and quite accurate description of “psychedelic-groove-oriented power rock” is a force unto its own. The dreamy, heavy songs of SuperGiant are laced with more than a nod towards Blues and Acid Rock. Which is not to say they are hippie-ish or boring. Hell no. Their Punk Rock as well as Metal roots and their obvious love of all styles of Rock (and music in general) are apparent and well integrated into their own sound. Kyle is a musician’s musician. His energy and focus is matched and kicked up more than a level or two by the heavy hitting, mind blowing attack from Gary. Two badass motherfuckers who drive this band hard and keep the time changes and dynamics of S/G’s music right in the pocket. Jeremy’s low key and calm approach to the guitar is deceiving, as he unleashes an ever shifting palette of style, intensity and touch. Utilizing an array of effects and chops the SuperGiant sound is almost complete. Completing the sound is Joel. In the tradition of any and all great frontman, Joel’s heartfelt and earnest delivery, combined with energy that borders on religious rapture, he embodies all that is exciting in a lead singer. He brings the crowd toward the undeniable reality that you are experiencing four men who love and respect what they are doing and how they will do it. SuperGiant projects a vibe that leaves you knowing that these men are a tight group of bros. On and off the stage. I dig being able to “feel” that constant transference of energy and excitement between the musicians in a band. SuperGiant is one of those bands. They brought the Rock.
They also brought a crowd, which is actually my only complaint of the evening. It was awesome to see so many family, friends and colleagues out to support the band. SuperGiant has done an excellent job in getting the word out on how hard they rock to their crew. Now if y’all can school those folks about the value and worth of sticking around and appreciating the other bands……. This is not the first time I’ve seen a full house of SuperGiant fans turn their enthusiasm off after the last note and book out of the club before the next band is even set up. Teach ‘em to spread the love……. None the less, SuperGiant has and is what a band should be: four motherfuckers who will suck you into their musical world and leave you screaming for more. I am enjoying watching the assent of Devil Riding Shotgun and SuperGiant like a son of a bitch. Hungry and hardworking, you know that the next show both these bands play will out do the ass whipping they both delivered last night! And that is a thing of beauty.
Pearl’s and Brass, out of Pennsylvania were road tight and no doubt, master musicians. Their tight, well polished, shoe-gazing-stoner-metal style is nothing short of rocking. Hard fucking rocking. A power trio if their ever was one, it was not un-like watching a young Climax Blues Band with Ginger Baker on drums. Lead drums! Appearing tired from their grueling 44 gig tour schedule, and obviously disappointed in so much of the crowd splitting after the local acts, P&B were still the consummate pros. Although their live shows aren’t as an elaborate soundscape as their recordings, they delivered a punishing and complex set that had the remaining crowd demanding a well deserved encore. And like the pros they are, Pearls and Brass gave us what we wanted.
A great fucking night of hard rocking fun and a great way to start off the work week. And if you dig rock music and are serious about “supporting the scene” or whatever your agenda is, do yourself a favor and catch Devil Riding Shotgun and SuperGiant the next time they play. You won’t be disappointed…….
(still the best) Hated (band in town).....
