amplab and Acids and Basses at Hunab Hookah – 4/11/08
This was one of the coolest shows I’ve seen at the only place I know where you can have a flavored smoke and lie down under a black light while grooving to music at perfect volume. The vibe was very chill. Each band performed first singly and then altogether in one cool little jam fest. g f x (Geoffrey Escandon of amplab) and the other guys (Jason Fink and Jim Coker of Acids and Basses) are, I think, improv gods. It was an acidy jazz show with very strong psychedelic undertones and overtones. And midtones. And crop circles. I won’t attempt to label the style or sound of these bands any further because, for me, it's always troublesome or inaccurate. Thanks C.C. (and C.A.) for enjoying the sounds. I definitely aim for the crop circles! It was my first trip to a hookah bar. I was shocked by all the fruity flavors available to smoke. They even provide individually wrapped prophylatics for them! The chai is also good. Anyway, it looks like we will be there monthly thru the summer.

Thee greatest guitar tech in the entire world was in attendance - Bill richardson! I always wondered where he goes to see music. Everyone needs to be taking their instruments to him. He's a genius.

That's a fact, zac!
Here's what we said about him when the Alibi asked us to contribute to the latest Best of Albuquerque issue; Best Instrument Repair Hands-down, it's Bill (Not-the-Governor) Richardson's Studio Guitar on Morningside NE (next to Stove). The man is a world-class guitar tech (just don't call him a luthier) and has the pedigree to back it up. Honest and unpretentious, Bill gets to know the musician or band and will repair or tweak your stringed instrument to a level of performance you probably didn't know existed. He's unbelievably affordable, does it for the love of the craft and has better stories than any Rock Dude you know. Like zac said, take your stuff to Bill Not-The-Governor Richardson. He is the best. (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |

The dude is so honest he tried to pay ME last time I took one of my instruments to him because one of the sets of strings he suggested didn't end up working out.
If nothing is broken he won't fix anything and he won't charge you a dime. He's worked magic on a few of my instruments that I thought were dead forever and well beyond repair. ...And the stories he has are unbeatable. Last time I was in the shop I ended up meeting the guitar player for the Vibrators and Jayne County. And we all passed around a guitar owned by Johnny thunders during his NY dolls days. Crazy. |

the governor!!! wish i could get him out to one of our shows! yep, Bill richardson is a badass! i'm glad we have him here in albuquerque. I have taken my SGs to him for repairs i can't remember him ever charging me. he always stops what he's doing and help out (which has been awesome because I usually go to him in emergency situations)
I don't know how he makes money but I really like free, esp. when i'm broke. hopefully he taxes the gearhead pousers with 2 dozen guitars who have never been in a band. he always tells me of his '62 SG but I have yet to lay eyes on her |

Oh man! He brought it in one day when he knew I was coming in. Got to rock it through one of his HiWatt rigs. A Thing Of Beauty And Wonder, Indeed. (still the best) Hated (band in town)..... |
