this was a successful show and good turnout for being the first of the series. The Stove was the perfect venue for this kind of thing. A couple of hot plates, a waffle iron, some human and non-human coffee makers, hog, green chile, syrup, eggs, hot sausage, some tofu salad(?) for the healthy, OJ, beer, vodka, and NOISE.
Outside in the backyard, OCCASIONAL DETROIT started the morning with a set that can't really be described, because you see, every O-D set is completely different from the last one you saw. They always look like they were either made up on the spot or rehearsed to death. I can never tell. This is probably why they are one of the most interesting bands to ever grace our city and will be remembered after we are all dead. This morning had Towondo with a airplanecontroller headset over his face, then inputted into one of the most jerry-rigged pedals (wrigley spearmint wrapper connectors) I have ever seen. Demetrisa was flipping radio stations faster than a DJ would scratch a record. FATHER OF THE FLOOD is one guy and played inside and brought with him about 600lbs of gear. Huge Sunno))))) amps and a "Breakfast in America"-era piano, guitars and a suitcase that no-one could see into. He played a gorgeous drone that literally rattled the art off the walls. I feel like a middle-school dropout trying to describe this (or any) music so I won't really try. FOTF music was kind of like going all the way to the front of a wave-pool at a waterpark. It's calmer up there. There. MAMA COMA is one of my favorite new NM bands, or maybe even bands in general. The hubby-wife duo played outdoors through 2 large bass amps and good thing, because their sound lives in that deep deep underwater place. Luke/Lucas played this circuit-bent-for-leather-kids-electric-guitar (one with a whammy) that sounded more like a cappuccino machine in a cement mixer. I saw little kids rocking out during this set and it wasn't even really that style of tunes. (?!shows what we know!?) It was more like monkey-chanters on a tractor. IPYTOR GAYVEN MACHISLAV, the solo project of Clifford from The Grave of Nobody's Darling and Shoulder Voices, closed out the brokefeast with an seriously amazing set of songs....hell, i'm no good at this music reviewing....but great songs, sometimes reminding me of early bowie or rallizes denudes or more....voice drenched in reverb...can't tell if he's singing in english...guitar loops in on itself, then making it's own beat, fights with the casio???,,,,,,Just Damn Good. You have to see all of these "bands" yourself, there is nowhere/no way to fit these things into a myspace genre category without choosing 'other'.Did anyone take any photos?? na.I spaced it. We will be having more, about every other month. Venue TBA. thanks. |

Mr. Lawrence said it was a blast. Had to work myself, but I'd like to see some pics, drink some vodka and maple syrup tonics at home, and pretend I was there.

Sssk, I think it was the second -- I'm looking at a SpeakerWaffle flyer from November that's still hanging around my desk. I only got to catch Gun Safe, but it made my morning. I hope there's more of them to come.
Squawk on. |

I walked in just as it ended. Still had a good time putting a few back, working of the hangover from the night before and meeting some new people.

Sorry, I was lazy and kept this thread from the 1st SWBC going. Yes, in short: GUNSAFE: cow-crust (?silly genre names),with a nice joeysantiago-like lead guitar piercing its way in and out of it. Loud too. WILLIAM FOWLER COLLINS: big drones from a horizontal six-string. Would like to hear this guy on a HUGE set of amplification. Good "Drone" in NM these days. If you like this kind of stuff, look out for an all-drone show coming soon. OLVIDESE: These guys looked sharp. Awesome instrumental duo. You know what, a better man (you know who) could explain this one better than I can. I'll leave it at that. Nonetheless, SEE THIS BAND. REDBEARD: Didn't actually play as Damien Lee's plane was delayed getting back home. So Alan G Ledergerber took the bull by the horns and played one of his harshest sets ever. Again, bigger amps, had we known, would have been more appropriate. A fun time all around. New faces, right on Davefame, Mike Trujillo cooking show, C.C.California biscuits+gravy, YaYaWaffles, a couple of mohawks did bust out the syrup+vodka, toddlers hearing more than the elders, etc, etc. Be there next time. rc+sa |
