The Bands Dr. Thunda and I made it down to Atomic Friday Night to check out the touring bands from Phoenix. All good stuff! Again, Albuquerque came out and supported some great bands. Chief Beef was my favorite band of the night. They reminded me of an indi-version of Queens of The Stone Age. The grooves were kickass! The guitars and bass rhythms weren’t your norm so I learned some cool techniques and sponged up some ideas. Their sound was very comprehensible, nobody over powered one another.
I bought a CD and T-Shirt.
The Heist We stumbled over to Burt’s Tiki Lounge afterwards for a night cap and positioned ourselves by the windows. Every once and awhile I’d glance over to 2 girls at the pool tables and noticed them admiring one of the paintings on the wall. So, we are done and I’m waiting for Thunda to pay out his tab by the front door. One girl zips by me out the door and then the other taps me on the shoulder and says, “Have a great night!” and she whizzes out the door too. I think to myself for one second and say, “NO WAY!” I run over to the pool table and the painting was totally heisted!! I told this to the bouncer and he ran out but the art thieves were nowhere to be found.
Chief Beef was great. The bass player had some amazing tone that reminded me of Tim Commerford from Rage Against the Machine (Fender/older STV-II/Ampeg fridge). A really tight band. I've never been into indie/rock stuff but really enjoyed this.
Okay, after listening to the CD for awhile, Dr. Thunda and I think their influences that they wear the most on their shoulders is Sparta, Death Cab For Cutie, Ambulance LTD and a little bit of Muse. They have that 90’s mentality of song writing. Thought out songs.. Byah!
FYI - i realize it's a couple months out still, but chief beef and us (emperors of japan) are coming back out to albuquerque on friday july 20th. we'll be playing at atomic again. i'm not sure who else will be on the bill yet. as we get closer to the show we'll post more info.
the emperors of japan are Bad A. We played with them at the atomic some time back and I really enjoyed their set. I picked up their cd and I really liked it. Reminded me of radiohead a little. I liked them!
chief beef and emperors of japan are coming back to ABQ yet again: saturday 3/8/08 at the tavern.
both bands have new albums out - EOJ with a full length that you can download for free here, and chief beef with an EP that will melt your face off like one of the nazis at the end of indiana jones.
