I saw SuperGiant for the first time at Burt's they were much less sugarcoated than I expected. Good songs, great stage performance.

Graves at Sea was pretty cool, though I only hung through about half their set. Man, those Orange amps are LOUD! It was like a Black Maria show. Based on their equipment setup, I thought they had a second guitarist, but it was the bassist using two huge rigs side by side. These cats built the suspense by creating feedback noise and fixing guitar cables for about 10 minutes. Once they started it was cool, but I kept waiting for it to pick up. Then I realized they must be a doom metal band.

Next door at Atomic around that time was Icky and Yucks (I think that's their name). I had never seen these dudes, but apparently they've been around for a while. They were probably the most on point/precise local band I've seen so far. There was some type of old school most pit where drunken fools would walk in circles and push people. Then the floor got slippery.

All in all a good night. Anyone else make it out?

Yep - Ronoso (where's the @$#%&%**#! tilde on this thing?) was up first with some noisy post-hardcore metalism. I'm not familiar with Fukrot, but evidently at least one member of Ronoso was previously in that band. I caught about 3 tunes - decent stuff.

Supergiant is gelling nicely - the first few times I saw them, there were some tentative moments here & there, but now that they have a number of gigs under their belts, they were radiating confidence. They appeared to be relaxed & enjoying themselves, and the music reflected that. The older material has gotten tighter, and the new tune was excellent!! Good job, dudes...

Graves at Sea - Yeah, DooM isn't for everyone, but there's something special about a drummer who can keep good time while playing the

"THUD...

...BOOM!

...CRASH!!"

that's most prevalent in the style. Graves at Sea were hella tight, but at a glacial tempo.

The guitarist, Nick, had a nice Orange fullstack (140 watt head), and after finding/switching out a bad patch cord, summoned forth walls of feedback and drone supplanted by avalanches of shattered metal. The bassist drove his huge rig expertly, providing a solid universe-throb foundation topped with monolithic slabs of thunder. Drummer kept it all tight - very impressive control and feel. On top of it all were the alternately chilling whispers and torn-larynx full voice vocals by the dreadlocked frontman. Not very pretty stuff, all in all, but that's DooM for ya - the genre does seem to plod along to many listeners not familiar with the style, but for those who hung, graves at Sea provided a dark, feedback-drenched ritual of purification and apocalypse to a largely black-clad, inked-up crowd of night-denizens.

Certainly a Fuck Yeah!! night. All three bands brought it. SuperGiant are some of the most positive Rockers around. I dig the music and I dig the attitude. Ace vatos, for sure.

Ronoso carries on the tradition of Fuckrot and brings the grind crowd out. Another band that can do no wrong.

Doom doesn't come much more Doom-y than Graves At Sea. A Gluey Porch Treatment era Melvin's tempo, with concentrated musicianship and skill. Volume that takes the listening experiance to that "next" level. You know, that level of "feeling" the music (on your innnards as well as the outside) as well as hearing it.

Then again, maybe everyone sucked this night (though I doubt it). I was having a fucking great night even before the show. Good friends, good food, super sweet, hot girlfriend, good drink, good other stuff (thanks again to the X family for their contribution to my great night. Thanks!) and three killer bands in the intimate setting that is Burt's Tiki Lounge.
I had a great night.

(still the best) Hated (band in town).....

thanks for the kind words and support of SuperGiant. we had a great time playing with roñoso and graves. very intense and heavy performance by both! i won't even try and describe Graves at Sea after RacerX's description. i dig the way they down-tempo and build the suspense until an explosive groove must be released. def. a killer band to experience with a heavy buzz.

again, good to see you guys out and you're always so supportive and we'll see you gordy and Black Maria at rallies friday!! and allen you at golden west afterwords! looking forward to hearing the new Devil Riding Shotgun material
